In the late 17th to early 18th century, there was a shortage of silver and so smiths included silver coins within the bowls of toddy ladles in order to bring the weight up. Due to strict laws about defacing coinage of the realm, it was common for the silver not to be hallmarked for fear of repercussions. This particular ladle contains a silver shilling from 1696. The shilling was gold plated before ladle construction. Condition: Excellent condition, coin a little worn, Origin: London, England, Date: 1696, Monarch: William III, Product: Ladle, Age: Pre-1800, Composition: Solid Silver, Material: English Sterling Silver, Condition: Exceptional
