Antique Indian architectural sandstone niche. Mid-19th century.
This exquisite sandstone niche from Rajasthan, dates back to the mid-19th century and is becoming increasingly difficult to source.
Reclaimed from architectural salvage, this would once have graced the walls of a high caste Brahmin home, and been embedded in it.
This hand-carved sandstone example still displays significant patches of white, jade and cobalt blue paint from a previous incarnation. Make no mistake, t his is an authentic, impressive stone niche that has housed oil or ghee lamps for decades, throwing a soft shimmering light on many a balmy Indian night.
Weighing a hefty 12.6 kgs, this shrine is substantial, and would look good, inside or out. Perhaps in a bathroom alcove with a tea light or candle, or spot-lit in a garden setting? Or even repurposed to house a favourite Hindu deity.
