The Art Nouveau era took place towards the end of the 1800s and beginning of the 1900s. The Art Nouveau era was characterized by several different movements that took place or began during this era. For instance, the Aesthetic period would have been culminating towards the end of the nineteenth century, though its influence on Art Nouveau is clear as the two styles both share a passion for light and airy pieces that focus on the intrinsic beauty of the piece rather than overwhelming it with jewels. The Art Nouveau era would have also been influenced by the Jugendstil movement, which was occurring at the same in Germany, both being stylistically driven by the natural world. Finally, the Arts and Crafts movement arose out of the same sentiment as the Art Nouveau era as they both represented a desire to turn away from the industrial and urban and return to the peace of days before, which is represented in the presence of pastoral scenes and earth tones in their respective pieces of jewelry. Intaglio stones, such as this sardonyx, were very popular for use in signet rings and other signet items, like that within the fob pendant. While no longer necessary for officiating seals or signing documents, signet items saw a rise in popularity during the Art Nouveau era as a result of the revival of Renaissance and ancient styles of jewelry and art. The focal point of this gorgeous pendant is the huge red sardonyx stone in the center of the bezel which is at one end of the item. This stone measures in at 19.09 carats. The stone is a semi-translucent deep red hue and features the hand carved crest of a certain group of people. This crest depicts the sideways facing busts of four elks in varying sizes. There is also a floral motif running through the center of the crest. These details are made even more prominent when light passes through the semi-translucent body of the stone, illuminating its lovely carving. This stone is held in place using a 14k rose gold bezel setting which attaches the stone to the rest of the fob pendant. The warm rosy tones of the gold are gorgeous in contrast with the bright red hues of the stone. This lovely pendant is composed of 14k rose gold and is heavy in metal value. This gorgeous item is a lovely example of Art Nouveau era jewelry and is certain to stun. This pendant has a fairly large bale which could fit around many different chains and necklaces. This bale serves as a slider bale, as well, and could be strung on one of the fancy chains that often emerge from the Art Nouveau era for a more unique look. This pendant can be worn on its own as a statement piece or paired with other items of jewelry and is not soon to be forgotten. It is truly a work of art which would make a wonderful gift or superb addition to any jewelry or antique collection. This gorgeous pendant is one of a kind and is not soon to be forgotten. Don't miss your opportunity to preserve this incredible piece of history. Damage: Age appropriate wear. The gold is ever so slightly patinaed in the low relief areas of the item which is to be expected of an item this age. *This listing is for the item only. All display boxes and/or photography props do not come with your purchase.* The History The Art Nouveau era, 1890-1910, was also called "La Belle Epoque" in French, which translates to "A Beautiful Time.” This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over the production of many products, including some jewelry. Signet rings have a long and regal history, with their earliest use dating back to Mesopotamia around 3500 B.C.E. Though the designs and motifs of signet rings have changed and evolved since that time period, their uses have stayed the same. Signet rings were used primarily as an identification mark for the powerful to safely seal important documents. For much of history, a wax seal was a more certain sign of validity than a signature. Oftentimes, signet rings were destroyed upon the death of the individual who possessed them so as to avoid fraudulent documents from appearing with their mark of approval. Still to this day signet rings are a sign of authenticity and power, making them an ideal addition to any antique collection. Seal Stamps occur in many different forms throughout history including Wax Seals, Pendants, and many other types of seals. Usually, a flat surface would be engraved with a Seal, Crest or Initials for one to dip in ink or to be used as a wax seal. Wax seals have been used for hundreds of years, in recent jewelry history softer stones would be used to create the seal and placed into metal. A stonecutter would then monogram or carve the seal with a family crest or initials. Intaglios are formed when an artisan carves downwards, into stone, to create an image, design, or pattern in low relief. These carving can be done in any material, though for jewelry purposes intaglios are often made out of precious or semi-precious stones as well as coral and glass. Intaglio rings often serve a purpose similar to either signet rings or cameos, as they can be used as a way to seal important documents or they can be used to celebrate archaic figures. Sardonyx is a type of chalcedony that usually contains flat-banded, white and brownish-red bands. For most of sardonyx's history, it has been used to create cameos and intaglios. In Ancient Rome, women wore sardonyx necklaces containing cameos of Venus in the hopes of harnessing the powers of the goddess of love. Soldiers wore sardonyx rings and intaglios containing images of the Mars, the god of war, into battle with the hopes that the sardonyx jewelry would act as protection.
