Seller: mcdionysos (2.467) 100%, Location: San Diego, California, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 264468324706 Preface: I am a self-confessed antique nut!!!! When considering mine or others' prices, PONDER.....Is this worth 50 cents or a dollar for every year it has survived? So this object that I may be offering, even at 50 cents/year would usually be worth more than my opening bid! Indeed, many antiques cost much more originally, adjusted for inflation. Not to mention most antiques appreciate in value! Just consider, my dear friends. Welcome tile fans! Beginning to sell my mostly LIFE-LONG tile collection, bit by bit, stay tuned....many more to list! Most collected over MANY years---Don't miss your chance at a one of a kind opportunity. When they're gone, they're gone! Starting ALL with much lower than I paid!! (Please consider, most of my tiles were bought from UK, so I paid their "air fare". NOT factored into price, but consider your savings as a result!) 372347106878One in a Series of Twelve in the"Idylls of the King" SeriesJohn Moyr Smith (signed)"Guinevere"c. 1875(6 inch square) Underglaze block print in brown & blue on white/eggshell ground, dust-pressed tile (Pattern number 1465) By the most prolific and talented Victorian illustrator, J. Moyr Smith. John Moyr Smith was one of the most productive illustrators of the Victorian Age: arguably a commensurate talent to Walter Crane, Greenaway and Caldecott. The best of the best! This tile amply illustrates his singular Art Nouveau and Pre-Raphaelite style: with the graceful lines, exceptional composition, attention to detail, and his love of texture & decoration vs. flat color. A master! Note how Smith sets up the circular border motif and then "violates" this border in several places, provoking visual excitement! I am a retired graphic designer, and have to say this, as well as other JMS designs, are beyond compare. Note the cool Celtic corner motives! I frankly feel his talent in many ways was superior to Crane! Signed Moyr Smith base of right pillar. You may be aware that the Nineteenth century was a "Golden Age" for tile making in England, as they invented and perfected the assembly line-type process of dust-pressing clay dust and printing designs. Previously, tiles were laboriously hand-painted individually on blanks. Later, colors sometimes WERE added to these by hand after printing (So-called "print & tint"). Victorians loved the sanitary nature of tiles and the industry flourished, being produced in all manner of styles and designs. Hence, it is a fertile field for any new collector. HAVE FUN!! ANY QUESTIONS WELCOME! Please ask before bidding! Thanks for looking!!I strive for win/win. I want to give you a good experience and ask that you will reciprocate with five star rating. Ebay is person to person---best thing about Ebay! Please do not "ding" me on shipping--yes an added expense but I am not Amazon. I will refund any overage; if I am under, to your benefit! :-) I strive for 5 star ratings from you and win/win situations. If any problems upon receipt let me know. The best thing about Ebay is YOU, and me! Condition: Very Good Condition! Two small indentations that are covered with brown glaz: upper right edge at about 1 o'clock and bottom edge at about 12:30.
