Seller: bdk-clocks (4) 100%, Location: Portland, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 402059733415 https://youtu.be/5t6SLJ9Ovo Video Link Above Description A high quality, late 19th century Winterhalder & Hofmeier movement housed in a c1830, extremely rare Macassar Ebony Veneered case. W&H made clocks in all styles & variations & I believe this may be one of the most rare. I have been able to find with ease their Twin Fusee Time & Strike, Quarter Strike with 5 gongs & their Triple Fusee Quarter Strike (with 8 bells, 9 gongs, 5 gongs or rarely 8 bells & 5 gongs) & the same non-fusee variants. I have NOT been able to find more than a single passing reference in a thread from 15 years ago on the NAWCC forums to a Twin Fusee Quarter Strike with both 8 bells & 5 gongs. The retailers ‘Williams’ of The Royal Exchange, London had a Chronometer, Watch & Clock Makers shop in the second Royal Exchange building (the original destroyed in the Great Fire of London) which was also destroyed by fire on the 10th January 1838. Due to the lack of any later information I assume the loss of their premises & stock resulted in the demise of the business. I believe this clock case originally held a twin fusee bell striking movement which at some point between then and c1900 was replaced with the current W&H twin fusee movement. The case interior has been slightly altered to allow the larger movement to fit. Case The veneered case is in excellent condition, it has been delicately cleaned & polished to restore it’s natural glow while retaining the original finish. The Macassar Ebony veneered, attractively proportioned & well preserved late Georgian/ early Victorian case, features subtle parquetry edging, four recessed corner panels with inset brass framing & pediment top. Red silk lined, brass fish-scale sound frets below flamed brass side handles with a large silk lined brass fret & brass lock to the rear door. To the base ogee-profiled skirting with small brass ogee bracket feet. Dial & Bezel The dial has been re-silvered, the numerals & other engraving re-waxed. The signed, silvered dial with large roman numeral hours encircled by a minute ring with inverted triangular five minute markers. Signed by the retailers ‘Williams, Royal Exchange, London’. The ‘Chime/ Silent’ lever located above the XII & the ‘Chime on 8 bells/ Four gongs’ lever by the III. The Bezel is held shut by a small catch which can be locked & unlocked with a small brass key via a brass encircled key hole on the front left of the case. Movement The movement has been fully disassembled, cleaned, serviced, oiled & passed 6 weeks of testing and regulation to gain the most accurate timekeeping. The 8 day, twin fusee, Winterhalder & Hofmeier movement with deadbeat escapement, strikes the quarters, by choice, on either 8 bells (Whittington) or 4 gongs (Westminster) and the hours on a larger 5th gong. With ‘Chime’ or ‘Silent’ facility and pull-repeat chord to repeat the most recent strike on demand. Signed to the base of the back-plate ‘W&H’, ‘Sch’, ’2’.
