This is a very unique fine. This is a fine old, antique Pacific Northwest style, hand-carved wooden chest that is from the first half of the 20th century. This is a very old chest and you can even see the marks in the wood from the hand-hewing tools - please see photos. This is not a bentwood box. This old chest is nailed together - please see photos. The maker of this chest is unknown. It could very well be a native artist, the carving on this chest is very detailed and beautifully executed, whoever carved it really knew what they were doing, but this chest is not executed in a traditional bentwood style; the sides, top and bottom are separate pieces. Could it be a native artist from another clan or tribe? Very possibly, but I cannot say for certain. PNW artwork has been very popular for a long time with collectors. Other clans or tribes knew that and emulated the PNW First Nation style with their own carvers to sell to exporters. What I can say is that this fine old chest was beautifully hand-carved by an artist who really knew what they were doing. This chest has a hand-carved frog design on three sides and also on the lid. The frog represents renewal, metamorphosis and transitions. This chest measures approximately 9" high, 11" deep and 15" tall with the lid in place. As stated earlier, this chest is nailed, and is not a steamed bentwood. It is covered in a dark stain. Some of the stain has chipped off, exposing the nails and original wood in small areas. The top is warped. Actually, its the wood that makes up the trim that has warped, it particularly shows at the corners of the box, please see photos. Also, the box is in really good condition, once again, the trim around the base of the box is slightly warped, not the box itself. The artist apparently used a different type of wood for the trim on the lid and on the base of the box. In spite of that, this is an extremely unusual, unique find that would be a wonderful addition to any PNW, First Nation style collection.
