Item:362700431351I AM RETIRED AND NOW RESTORE ANTIQUE AND VINTAGE CLOCKS AS A HOBBY. I HAVE HAD PROFESSIONAL HOROLOGICAL TRAINING. I SPECIALISE IN ANTIQUE CARRIAGE CLOCKS. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO ACQUIRE THIS MINIATURE MARGAINE RECENTLY AND FELT PRIVILEGED TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CLEAN AND SERVICE IT EARLIER THIS MONTH. ANTIQUE MINIATURE 8 DAY TIMEPIECE CARRIAGE CLOCK* BY MARGAINE OF PARIS MADE AROUND 1885. NUMBERED MOVEMENT. WITH CLASSIC DOUBLE-ENDED CARRIAGE CLOCK KEY * The clock is shown in the second picture alongside a standard sized carriage clock for size comparison purposes only. The clock for auction is the small one on the left in that picture. Francois-Arsene Margaine was one of the most famous makers of carriage clocks in the C19th. This one is numbered and bears the trademark "A M" with a clock in the form of a beehive between the "A" and the "M". The company was awarded a silver medal at the Paris Exhibition in 1889 and a gold medal in 1900. Height (with handle folded down) 3 inches (7.5 cms); Width 2 inches (5 cms); Depth 1 3/4 inches (4.5 cms) CLOCK CASE: Brass. Perfect original condition. The case looked a little tired when I acquired the clock and the folding bale handle was badly distorted. I therefore dismantled it completely in order to carefully straighten the handle . The original lacquered finish to the case was good so I then simply cleaned and hand-polished the parts before giving them some coats of special micro-crystalline wax polish to protect the finish. It now has a durable antique patina and looks almost as good as new.MOVEMENT: Beautifully engineered movement in perfect original condition. The number 5666 is stamped on the back plate beneath the Margaine trademark (see close-up photo'). The movement is fitted with its original jewelled escapement. The clock was working when I acquired it, but to be on the safe side, I took the movement out of the case, removed the hands and dial, checked it carefully for wear (there was none), before cleaning, reassembling and oiling it with appropriate grade clock and watch oil. It is now working beautifully and keeping good time on an 8 day wind.DIAL: White enamel-on-copper with black roman numerals and chapter ring. Both the dial and the hands are original and in perfect condition.GLASSES: All five thick bevelled glasses are in perfect condition. KEY: The clock comes with a classic double-ended carriage clock key. One end is for winding the movement and the other is for adjusting the hands. There is also a fast/slow adjustment lever which is reached through the rear door - which opens and closes very easily with absolute precision.INSTRUCTIONS: I will enclose a brief note with the clock explaining how to get it going if it has stopped in the post. I will also let the successful bidder have my contact details should you have any questions later about how to care for the clock.THIS CLOCK IS IN SUPERB ORIGINAL CONDITION. IT IS A COLLECTOR'S ITEM!
