Original Antique Hammond Map 1912 Arctic Regions and on reverse Antarctic Regions showing the routes of important explorations  (1650-1911) Including most recent discoveries at the time by Peary,  Shackleton &  Amundsen Robert Peary Superimposed  on the Arctic map  in red are updated routes to the North Pole by  Robert Peary.  On April 6, 1909, American explorer Robert Peary, Matthew Henson and four Inuits reached what they determine to be the North Pole. Decades after Peary’s death, however, navigational errors in his travel log surfaced, placing the expedition in all probability a few miles short of its goal. Also shown in red is shown Aannooktak (Annoatok ), a small hunting station in Greenland on Smith Sound about 15 miles north of Etah which is also shown. Etah was settlement in Greenland which was a starting point of discovery expeditions to the North Pole. Annoatok was used as a base by Frederick Cook during his Arctic expedition of 1908–09, when he claimed to have reached the North Pole. Cook's claim has never been substantiated) Ernst Shackleton On the Antarctic map superimposed in red shows on January 9,1909, Ernest Shackleton reached a new Farthest South latitude of 88̊23' S, a point only 112 miles (180 km) from the Pole;  on January 16, 1909 three men (Douglas Mawson, Edgeworth David, and Alistair Mackay) from Sir Ernest Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition claimed to have found the south magnetic pole, which was at that time located on land. Roald Amundsen Roald Amundsen's polar party was the first to reach the South Pole on December 14th, 1911 as shown the map. Also shown on the map is Framheim.  Framheim was used as a wintering hut in Antarctica from 28 January 1911 to 30 January 1912. The hut was established on the ice shelf in the Bay of Whales, but disappeared into the sea sometime around 1960 after this part of the ice shelf calved off.   A very scarce map and a great addition to any collection of polar exploration. page:  5.8" x 7.9" map image: 5" x 7" This map is from Hammond's Handy Atlas of the World With New Census C.
