The black of the slate case in good condition along the base and front. The production mark stamped on the movement is: Japy Freres & Cie Medaille D'honneur. 1867. 7 8 4 9 9 11 Additional dating can be determined through the “PENDULE DE PARIS” clock movement (literally “clock of Paris”) = the classic 4” round movement found in so many ‘marble’, figural, and lead crystal clocks from France. Largest quantities 1850 – 1914. Free Trade Treaty with England in 1860 meant that a great number were exported. Additionally, the movement features a count wheel (as seen in the photos)Prior to ~1880 a count wheel (readily seen outside the back plate) was typically used on French movements, though there are exceptions, and have seen a rack & snail used as early as 1865. After 1880, the French generally used a rack and snail strike mounted on the outside front of the movement. On condition, there are only a couple of very minor edge chips on the case. The dial is excellent. The escapement retains its pallet jewels. The dial has been inscribed with "Rostaing A La Verpilliere" from the original owner. The translation possibly refers to the Rostaing family from the area of Verpilliere, France. The signed movement has been cleaned and serviced by an expert. The clock keeps great time! The clock strikes a bell on the half hour and one time for each hour, on the hour. This clock is heavy and fragile. Insurance will be included for shipping.
