This book set introduces the nations of the world at a time when Japan was first opening to the West. Each volume has its original blue lined covers and fold-out maps color-printed by woodblock techniques. The first volume has a decorative title page, an image of a globe, depictions of the "five races" of the world, a color printed flag, illustrations of animals and people and a fold-out map of Asia. The second volume has 5 color printed flags, including the "Stars 'n Stripes" and fold-out maps of Africa, North America, South America and Australia (4 foldout maps). There are also illustrations of world people and places, including the pyramids and Washington D.C. Volume 1 has a stain on the title page and initial pages, some worming on the final page; volume 2 has some worming throughout, but mostly in the upper margin.
