Seller: dogstar_rising (663) 100%, Location: Astoria, New York, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 264330908038 Good bookplate from vol. 7 of Hokusai’s famous Manga Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) The Manga: 伝神開手 (Denshin Kaishu) Transmitted From the Gods, A Revelation of All Things Originally published in 1817 Edo Era (Bunka 14)The bookplate is from a slightly later edition, printed from the original 1st edition printing blocks. Place of publication: Nagoya-shi (Aichi-ken) or Edo (present day Tokyo) Title: 常総 筑波の積雪 (Joso Tsukuba no Sekisetsu) Ibaraki Prefecture; 積雪 Sekisetsu “Fallen Snow”In overall nominal condition with a solid impression. There is some fading and soiling. Corners of each page are smudged from over a 150 years of being admired, i.e., thumbing. This book was definitely enjoyed throughout its long history. Not the greatest state of preservation, but clearly an early pull off the blocks. Similar to the volumes in the archives of The British and Smithsonian museums. The book had many pages that were badly damaged, therefore I decided to break it up and put many of the best quality bookplates up for auction. Volume 7 contained 33 folded sheets (cho) with tri-color illustrations (black sumi, light black sumi, and light vermilion) and text. Volume 7 is unique in that it represents people, events, and in one instance cranes, in ‘specifically named’ landscapes. The images from volume 7 are a part of the original series of fifteen volumes of Hokusai’s famous Manga. Hokusai’s reputation in the West was in part made by this creative series of picture-books (e-hon); fifteen volumes in all, thirteen of which were published during his lifetime. These volumes were considered teaching handbooks (e-dehon), covering ‘all things in the universe’—but in fact, they are so much more. Staying true to the elements of drawing (ART!), any straightforward representation of nature was cut off by the necessity to articulate plastic demands that were brought together in a dance of intelligence among forms. The endless wealth of humor added to the variety of subject matter covered in these many volumes need no explanation, philosophy or reaction to any condition. The message is a large splinter embedded in the art of art—creation. WELL OVER 150 YERAS OLD, THIS A CHANCE TO OWN AN ARTIFACT OF THE WORLD’S HISTORY. Price reflects both the state of preservation and how widely recognized the image is. I work hard to provide fast and courteous service, as my aim is complete customer satisfaction. Thank you for visiting my store. In other words, bid with confidence.
