I am  retired (with professional horological training), and have been restoring antique clocks as an interest for over 35 years. I specialise in antique and vintage carriage clocks. I've worked on hundreds of these clocks over the years and this one is one of the more elegant shaped clocks I have come across: I really enjoyed overhauling and servicing it last month in the peace and quiet of my workshop (!). It is in exceptionally good condition and looks really stunning on display.

BRASS CLOCK CASE: Solid brass in perfect original condition. It still has its base masking plate (these are often missing). All case parts bear the same matching number (15), showing it to be totally original. The opening rear brass door is an absolute perfect fit - a good sign for obvious reasons! The case was absolutely filthy when I acquired the clock. It had obviously been stored away for years. But, it hadn't been worked on either and somewhat unusually, all the assembly screws were original and in great condition. I completely dismantled the case and then cleaned, polished and waxed each part by hand before rebuilding the case. It now has a subdued (and not over-polished), antique patina which should last for years.

MOVEMENT:  Excellent quality 8 day timepiece made by Couaillet Freres - whose trade mark arrow is stamped on the back plate. It is also stamped "MADE IN FRANCE" just below the click spring. It has a replacement Swiss 7 jewel lever escapement and so keeps very good time. It is beautifully engineered and finished (the back plate screws for example, have all been "blued"). After carefully checking the movement for wear, I completely dismantled it to give it a thorough clean, pegged it out, polished the pivots on the lathe and then oiled it with appropriate high-grade clock and watch oil. I hand polished all the plates prior to rebuilding it; I also cleaned and oiled the escapement. The movement  is now in perfect working order. There is a fast/slow adjustment lever which is reached through the opening rear door. The movement should not need servicing again for many years.

DIAL: The white enamel-on-copper dial is original and in good condition. I repaired a small chip to the top right corner, but this can only be seen when the movement is out of the case. It has bold roman numerals and each 5 minute mark on the chapter ring is highlighted with a gold painted dot. The delicate polished blued steel hands are original and in good condition.

GLASSES:  All five glasses are in perfect condition. The front glass is shaped to match the contours of the case and the little bevelled top glass is similarly bowed to the front.

KEY: The clock comes with a classic double-ended brass carriage clock key: one end is for winding the 8-day movement and the other is for adjusting the hands.

  • Condition: The brass case and movement (by Couaillet Freres), are in excellent condition having just been completely restored and serviced. The dial has a chip (which I have repaired), to top right corner which is only visible when the movement is removed from the case. The five glasses (including the unusual convex front glass and shaped top glass), are also all in perfect condition.e photo's). It has a replacement Swiss lever escapement and still has its base masking plate (these are often missing). A beautiful antique timepiece in outstanding original condition..
