Seller: diwil36 (32) 100%, Location: Chester, Ships to: GB & many other countries, Item: 392512418892 This is a lovely and rare combination Antique French Gilt Mantel / Massive Carriage clock which incorporates a thermometer and compass which is extremely rare. The clock is by the renowned French maker DIETTE HOUR. The clock is of lovely proportions and very detailed as can be seen from the photographs. The white dial is set out with Arabic numerals and minute markers, and has a stunning gilt finish with fine filigree work above and below the dial. It has bevelled glass over the dial. There is also a lovely shaped handle to the top which sets it off nicely and to the four corners are beautifully detailed reeded pillars and four finials to the corners of the top. The top features a compass and a thermemeter with the thermometer scale being in REAUMUR FAHRENHEIT, its is very rare to find a thermometer scale in REAUMUR. The clock is wound at the rear and the hands are also adjusted at the rear and is complete with a double ended key. The movement is stampted 371 D.H. with D. H. being the trademark for DIETTE HOUR. The background to this clockmaker is as follows: 'Charles Victor HOUR, one of the co-founders of HOUR LAVIGNE which still produces some of the finest and most spectacular clocks today he began as an apprentice at 11 years of age. Twenty years later, he bought out a failing manufacture and in 1891 took on an associate - Diette. Together they became one of the most important clock makers in France. Hour then associated himself with Maurice Lavigne and by the end of the XIX C, Hour Lavigne was the largest clock and timepiece manufacturer in France with over 800 employees. Carriage clock with DH stamped on movement DIETTE HOUR (D.H.) During the years of association with Diette, most of the models produced reflected the styles and taste of the period, including small carriage clocks with a visible escapement and balance wheel. They had DH stamped on the back of the movement. The approximate dimensions of the carriage clock are: 8 1/2 inches / 21.5 cm high with handle up & 7 inches / 18 cm high with handle down x 5 1/2 inches / 14 cm across the front of the clock x 4 1/4 inches / 10.5 cm deep CONDITION: The clock is in lovely condition, as can be seen from the photographs and is in working order.
