Short Description:  Antique Regency sampler, silk on linen, Emily Barker 1818 aged 13, framed

Size:  F rame 58 cm square, sampler 50.5 cm square approx

Age:  1818

Condition:   Sampler in overall very good condition, colours fairly fresh, some small holes with backing repairs not very obvious,  occasional light soiling (see photos)

This unusual sampler is done in silk on linen, and shows the names and birthdays of the maker's five brothers and sisters, aged 8 to 30 years old.  There is also a lovely little verse.

Elizabeth Barker has recorded at the bottom that she finished the sampler in 1818 when she was 13 years old.  There is  a not quite symmetrical border of alternating red and gold rosettes, a series of urns with flowers, and at the bottom a delightfully naive Adam and Eve by the Tree of Knowledge.

The sampler is remounted in a late 19th century solid oak frame with a gilt slip.  It is acrylic glazed.

A good large and early example of English sampler work.
