Item:174045735895Translucent nephrite: pale green streaked with brown (see photo with back lighting). Carved in an archaic style with a pattern of incised geometric lines, surmounted with a mythical beast (dog-like or leonine). One of the lower corners is slightly beveled with the inscribed line running over the bevel. This intentional bevel may mimic the ritual defacement found on some archaic axe blades or be due to the natural form of the original piece of jade. There is a minor chip and small pit along one edge. Dimensions: 8.0 cm (3.1 in) high, 2.5-3.4 cm (1.0-1.3 in) wide, and 0.4 cm (0.2 in) thick. Weight: approx. 27 grams. Comes with a letter of certification from Burton Associates, Hong Kong: "This is to certify that Article #6 ... is an antique Chinese brown nephrite jade carving in the form of a ritual axe blade which dates from the early Ching Dynasty. Circa 1644-1795."
