Antique Bohland & Fuchs, Circa 1890, Copper Cornet Stenciled By Dyers
This rare piece is worthy of professional restoration or displayed in a museum!
This Bohland & Fuchs Model 2, circa 1890 cornet is made of copper with brass fittings. It is stenciled “DYERS Improved MODEL” and measures 12-1/2” in length minus the mouthpiece which is missing. Dyer was a dealer and importer in Boston MA, Makato & St Paul MN. He became the largest music house west of Chicago. He started in Boston 1855-1868. He moved to Mankato MN 1869-1882, In St Paul from 1882 using the name Dyer & Howard. In 1885, the name was changed to W.H. Dyer and Bro. This was part of an estate that we purchased in its entirety. It was listed in the estate catalog at $750.00 with no maker’s name. I had to perform additional research and want to thank the experts for helping me identify it
The condition of this cornet is rough with dents, oxidation and a few missing parts. Its rarity and desirability both place it in class that would make it worthy of display in a museum or justify the expense of a professional restoration. All three slides still operate and spring back. There is no case for this and the mouthpiece and wish-bone spit key is missing. The missing mouthpiece doesn’t pose a problem and the spit key can be found since it was in production for three decades on less rare models. Please see detailed images for a better idea of what is missing and its condition.
Here are some notes in regards to this exact cornet by Kenton Scott of Horn-U-Copia Brass Instruments Makers online reference which was forwarded to Ron Berndt of Tumpet-History.com:
“From that, it appears they ran multiple retail operations in the Midwest, mostly in the music business, and stenciled instruments from many makes. In the late 19th century, Bohland & Fuchs was the most prolific supplier of stencil product in the world.
It's too bad the wish-bone spit key is missing, as the horn appears relatively intact otherwise. Its possible you may find a replacement on a far worse wreck on EBay at some point, as that key assembly was common to several B+F models over a 3 decade period. A skilled restorer (not school rental repair tech, a restorer) can make that horn look pretty good if the part can be located.”
