Antique Arts & Crafts Silver and Turquoise Ring Student / Apprentice Piece? - c.1910 ~ Welcome to my auction for this pretty, early 20th century silver ring ~ This is a delightful silver and turquoise stone ring that is made in the arts & crafts manner - it dates from approximately the first two decades of the 20th century. The front face of the ring is an elongated oval shape that has applied silver wire decoration that forms a typical stylised leaf decoration, to the shoulders of the ring is a simple berry decoration. To the centre of the face is a collet set turquoise matrix stone - as can be seen in picture 5, the back of the ring's face is closed and without decoration. The shank is formed quite simply by two pieces of silver wire which fan out into a V shape where they attach to the back of the rings face. The ring is currently sized at a U.K. size K 1/2 which is U.S. size 5-1/2 - the internal diameter of the ring is 16.10mm - the size of the face of the ring measures 2.1cm x 0.7cm - the total unpacked weight is 3.1g. Looking at the way the ring has been made it appears to be a little naive in places and my personal opinion is that this an apprentice piece or jewellery student item - designers, jewellers and the Arts & Crafts guilds always had young apprentices learning silversmithing and jewellery making techniques and I think this is one of them - despite is naivety it's a charming little ring and looks nice when worn. There are no marks to the piece whatsoever so it's impossible to say who made it - that said it is extremely indicative of an early 20th century piece and the so called 'Liberty Style', and having seen many pieces of jewellery from this era it's not unusual to see pieces completely unmarked such as this - the metal used has been tested as silver. The condition of the item is generally good with no major issues to report - as can be seen in picture 8 there is a small blob of silver solder to the inside of the shank - I don't know why it's there as it doesn't appear to holding anything together - naturally, you can't see this when the ring is worn. Picture 4 shows a top view of the ring and you may notice that the shank is not an absolute perfect circle as the thickness of the wire varies slightly along its length, it may of had a few bumps over time when it's been worn but again this doesn't detract and you wouldn't notice it whatsoever when worn. Please study the images provided to satisfy yourself as to the condition of the item - if you have any further questions please ask and I'll be happy to oblige. Postage to U.K addresses is £4.45 (signed for) - postage to international addresses is £12.95 (tracked / signed for). Thanks for looking.
