Seller: lewispaultribal (447) 100%, Location: Brisbane, QLD, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 183398271320 A wonderful example of a Ramu River/Upper Keram River flute mask or plaque, with Garra type hooks: the internalised mask face is particularly impressive. The powerfully protruding forehead boss of this face, the general carving style, and the heavily encrusted patina suggest great age. As well as being shaped at both ends for attachment to larger ceremonial items, a piece such as this probably served an amuletic purpose - hence the handling and ritual patina. There is end loss to a couple of the upward hooks, but overall the piece is in excellent condition, with traces of pigment under the surface encrustation and on the back. It is 20" (51 cm.) in length. International shipping will be $29.00, and within Australia location dependent at cost.Truly a rare and exciting artefact.
