An 18th century leather covered travelling trunk.

The pine frame covered in leather with brass studs made in the 1700’s.

The leather is worn in places and at the front there is a missing patch through which it can be seen that the trunk has been recovered (a long time ago) as older stud pattern holes are visible. The underlying wood is deal and the interior has a painted papier mache type lining.

The leather surface has a great patina and the trunk has seen use until the late 19th century or early 20th century judging by its attached travel labels. These could date from early railway use in the 1830's onwards. The top handle, lock and hinges all appear original with the existing leather cover and studs. There may have been lifting handles on the sides that were removed during recovering but if that was the case this happened a very long time ago as the existing cover probably dates to the early to the early 1800’s.

Note: The key cover is stamped ‘Patent’ and these were Important developments in patent law during the 18th century. During the reign of Queen Anne, patent applications were required to supply a complete specification of the principles of operation of the invention for public access.

In 1815 William Jones of New Street, Birmingam was fitting slightly more sophisticated looking locks with the word ‘Patent’ on the key cover. (Source: https://www.rubylane.com/item/454213-TA11241A/Georgian-Hide-Trunk-Domed-Original-Makers)

Dimensions: 56cms x 34cms x 26cms high. Weight: 4.6kgs (Heavy and bulky item to securely P+P)

Condition: The hasp has been forced at some time as the lock key is missing. The hasps remaining protrusion still engages in the lock (see photographs). This is ‘just sublime’ to use a Para Handy phrase.
