A superbly presented coin, struck to commemorate one of the world's bloodiest shipwrecks.
Over the 400-odd years it operated, the ships of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) made no less than 8,190 outward and homeward voyages to and from the Netherlands.
305 of those voyages ended in disaster, four VOC ships were wrecked along the Western Australian coast.
Of these four wrecks, the Batavia has arguably has the richest history as well as the most compelling story.
This 2015 $5 Fine Silver Proof Coin shows the Batavia on the open seas, and is framed by a sextant. The VOC balemark sits to the right of the ship.
The coin is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, is superbly presented in a high-quality presentation case, which is itself housed in a colour cardboard shipper.
The skull and crossbones is framed in blood red on the front of the colour shipper, leaving no uncertainty as to the true history of this gruesome wreck.
The coin, case, outer shipper, and certificate are all included and remain in excellent condition.
