Often, however, interiors are in un-usable and un-saleable states so we refurbish as sympathetically as possible thereby keeping the integrity of the boxWe also try not to over-restore box exteriors thereby taking away the character *Whilst we make every endeavour to ensure the information we give is accurate, we can only work within the limits of provenance available and our own experience and expertise* THIS IS A VICTORIAN BURR WALNUT GOTHIC REVIVAL BOXWITH EBONISED RADIUSED EDGES TO THE TOP IS EXTENSIVE CUT BRASS PIERCED AND HAND-CHASED DECORATION WITH STYLISED BRONZE INSERTS CIRCA 1870(approx 149 years old) THE CARTOUCHE IS ALSO PIERCED CUT BRASS WITH A BRONZE INSERT DEPICTING AN EXQUISITELY EXECUTED HUNTING SCENE THE FRONT OF THE BOX HAS A LARGE STYLISED CUT BRASS KEY ESCUTCHEON This box is most probably the work of Betjemann & Sons of Islington, North London who were in the forefront of developing this type of machine cut brass decoration often with bronze or pietra dura inlays. Much of their work was retailed through luxury shops in the fashionable West End. The firm was started in 1848 by the Great Grandfather of Sir John Betjemann (Poet Laureate 1972 until his death in 1984) and the origins of the family were Dutch. Sir John immortalized in verse his regrets about letting down his father in refusing to continue the family business. The firm thereby finally wound up in 1939. THE COMPARTMENTALISED LIFT-OUT TRAY IS A REPLACEMENT WITH A USEFUL RING SLOT THE TRAY AND BOX ARE LINED IN JEWEL GREEN ART PAPER THE PULL DOWN LETTER SLOT IS PADDED AND COVERED IN CONTRASTING JEWEL GREEN CRUSHED VELVET.THIS IS A REPLACEMENT AND HAS STRONG LINEN HINGES.
