Item:113826620616The last of an era in quality clock making, here is a beautiful 8-day bell striking timepiece by Richard & Cie.Gilded brass with cut glass panels, ornate corner pillars with shaped caps, a pristine white dial with a very fine chapter ring, complemented with both numerals and outer numbers, the dial is finished with a pair of black moon styled hands. The movement is beautifully made eight-day with bell strike, this sounds half hourly and with the hours(outstanding condition). Made around the late 1990s these are amongst the final clocks to carry this name. Brief historyThe company Richard and Co was advertised as being founded in 1885, although the company at this time seems to have been called Lemaitre-Bermann. Richard formed a partnership with Bergmann, but this was dissolved on 29th December 1867 when Richard took over the business completely, to form the company Richard and Co.At some point, Earnest Richard took over from his father, and in 1898 Richard and Co was converted into a limited liability company under the name Richard and Co Ltd, one of the directors being E.A. Richard. The business subsequently moved from 24 Cannon Street to 122 Aldersgate Street. The company was taken over by Smiths industries in 1931, at which time it was described as a "significant London clock wholesaler", being owned by Earnest Adolphe Richard and run by the family. Ultimately Richard and Co became "The French Clock House" run by Peter and John Richard, the grandchildren of the original founder. The French Clock House filed its last tax return in 1996.
