Please note all these UV protection oils are for external use only. Please note that Osmo have changed the way they describe the finish, changing it from satin-matt to satin but there has been no actual change to the product formulation or finish. As the finish can vary significantly depending on the age, condition etc of the wood it is being applied to we strongly recommend that a test area is always done first.
Product description: Osmo UV-Protection-Oil 410 and 420 Extra are clear (424, 425, 426, 427, 428 & 429 are not clear) with a satin finish, whilst 424, 425, 426, 427, 428 & 429 contain coloured pigment designed to further enhance the UV protection whilst allowing you still to see the grain of the wood underneath. The Osmo UV protection oils are based on natural oils and are microporous so do not crack, flake, peel or blister and do not require sanding back when an additional coat is required.
When used as a final finish after staining wood, Osmo UV Protection Oil prolongs the renovation time significantly. As a stand alone finish, with two coats, it prolongs the greying process on vertical surfaces by UV-Protection factor 12 in comparison to untreated wood. The Extra versions (not 410) contains active ingredients which protect it from mold, algae and fungal attack. Easy to renew, no sanding or primer necessary. Easy to apply and will not dry during application. The 424, 425, 426, 427, 428 and 429 versions all contain coloured pigments designed to enhance the colour and provide greater UV protection than a clear product, if a lighter colour is required they can be applied as a single coat and then over-coated with 420. We strongly advise that a test area is done on an off-cut or inconspicuous area prior to any application to ensure that the colour and finish are what you are looking for. Osmo UV-Protection-Oils are based on natural vegetable oils. Natural oils penetrate deeply into the wood, keeping it elastic and healthy, and preventing it from drying and becoming brittle. The wood is allowed to breathe. Moisture can evaporate. Shrinking and swelling are reduced and no sanding back is required for any future applications. Health and environment: The principle of Osmo to manufacture and supply only products which are safe and environmentally friendly during production as well as for application resulted in the successful certification according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 (quality management) and DIN EN ISO 14001 (environmental management). Recommended use: Application range As a clear satin finish (1 coat) 410 and 420 can be applied on all Osmo exterior products such as Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain or Osmo Wood/Decking Oil on claddings, doors, windows, window shutters, balcony claddings, decking and garden furniture. Osmo UV-Protection-Oil is also an additional weathering protection and prolongs the durability of the finish. Please note that horizontal elements must have at least a 15 degree angle so that water runs off and does not pool and that sharp edges must be rounded with a radius greater than 2 mm. This means Osmo 420 is not suitable for horizontal surfaces. Advice: Owing to the high oil content the clear UV-Protection-Oil shows a slight yellowing effect when used as a final finish on white stained surfaces. Therefore, we recommend using the Osmo 429 as a final finish for already white or pale stained surfaces, a small test area should be done first. Complete finish (2 coats) for wood surfaces that should retain its natural appearance. Ideal for roof overhangs, doors, windows, window shutters, balcony claddings, garden furniture and above-water wood in boat construction (mast, rail etc). For exotic woods we recommend a trial coat. The comparison pictures above are only designed to be a guide, you should always do your own tests on an off-cut or inconspicuous area prior to application, don't forget that when applying 424, 425, 426, 427, 428 or 429 you can use 410 or 420 for the second coat if required. Number of coats required 1 coat = final finish 2 coats = complete finish Coverage: 1 l = approx. 18 m² (1 coat smooth wood) 1 l = approx. 12 m² (2 coats smooth wood) Stripped and rough sawn wood need more material because of their surface structure.
Surface preparation:
Wood surface must be clean, dry and frost-free (maximum moisture content 20%). Remove old varnishes. If additional protection against blue stain, rot and mildew is required for outdoors pre-treat (if possible from all sides) with Osmo Base Coat 4001* this is particularly important for surfaces such as window sills. Apply final finish after 12-24 hours drying time. Advice: Silvering can be removed with Osmo wood reviver power gel. Where extra protection is required we recommend using Osmo 4001 WR Base Coat, this is a clear wood impregnation which provides additional protection against blue stain, rot and insect attack. The 4001 base coat also penetrates deeply in to the wood helping to prevent swelling and shrinkage. (*Use biocides safely! Always read the label and product information before use). There should be a minimum 15 degree angle on architectural joinery on the horizontal e.g. windowsills. Sharp edges have to be rounded (corner radius > 2 mm).
Please note that fresh wood containing high levels of natural oils (including Cedar) and especially hard or exotic woods need to weather for 10 - 12 weeks (2 - 3 weeks for Larch) before application, if this isn't done the oil will not be absorbed in to the timber. If you have any doubt you should always do a small test patch first.
We recommend that with softwoods such as Douglas Fir, Pine and Spruce an initial application of WR Base Coat 4001 is applied. Methods of application: Osmo UV-Protection-Oils are ready to use. Please do not thin & stir well. Apply with stiff brush (Natural Bristle Brush) or Microfibre Roller thinly and evenly along wood grain. Allow extra ventilation when applying in enclosed spaces. When used as a complete finish apply second coat after drying. The finish of Osmo UV Protection Oils are, amongst other things, influenced by the woods natural characteristics, therefore a trial application is required before the main application.
The minimum application and drying temperature is 5°C but we recommend not applying at below 8°C if possible. Please note the minimum temperature needs to be maintained whilst its drying to ensure the oil is absorbed. The maximum application temperature is 35°C so please take care especially when applying to dark coloured woods exposed to the sun. Corrosion : In general the use of galvanised, non-oxidising nails and fasteners is recommended. Cleaning of tools: With Osmo Brush Cleaner (benzene-free), Code: BCTC1. Drying time: Approx. 12 hours (dust dry in approx. 4 hours). Allow extra ventilation when applying in enclosed spaces. Renewal: Depending on the level of weathering apply 1 coat of Osmo UV-Protection-Oil after approx. 3 - 4 years on the cleaned and intact finish. In general, one has to take a shorter renovation time into account when surfaces are exposed to extreme weathering and surfaces where water cannot drain (horizontal surfaces). For some timber species, which have water-soluble ingredients (e.g. Oak or Idigbo), and in some extreme locations the finish may require re-coating more regularly to maintain the unique protection qualities of this product. If, however, the greying process has already begun revive the surface with the Osmo Wood Reviver and re-apply with 2 coats of the Osmo UV-Protection-Oil. Advice: Damage caused during installation (fixing holes/cut edges) and other surface damages e.g. cracks should be treated immediately with two coats. These areas will grey quickly if left untreated. Storage: Shelf life is 5 years or more if can is tightly closed. If thickened by frost, it will regain its consistency under normal temperatures within 26 - 36 hours.
