Lot Description:

This is a diverse group of 49 common Sahara desert found tools. This lot contains ovate, stemmed, triangular, and uni-facial  tool forms (projectile point and scrapper/blades) from the southwestern Sahara (northern  Mauritania/Mali).  These  tools were used to hunt or process water fowl and other game in the now dried up lakes of the Sahara 4,000+ years ago.

The shortest tool is 1/2 inch long (13 mm).

The longest tool is  1 11/16th inches (43 mm).

The penny in the photograph is for scale, not a part of the auction.

The condition is  average to good, there are a minor dings to barbs and tips on many of these tools; as can be expected with working tools. See picture for details.

Background information is provided with my 2-page essay on the subject, which will be included.

Neolithic populations living near now dried lakes and rivers in what is now the Sahara desert; used these tools in the hunt for and processing of waterfowl and small game. The end of the Ice Age resulted in global climate changes which stopped the rains and forced these Neolithic (New Stone Age) peoples into new modes of existence, either agriculture which was just beginning at the end of the Neolithic, or a nomadic animal husbandry mode of existence. The New Stone Age was a very dynamic era giving rise to agriculture, pottery, and permanent settlements, all of which were milestones in humankind's march toward 'civilized' life. The Sahara Neolithic lasted from 9,000 to 4,000 BP (years Before Present).

I will include my 2-page essay on the Sahara Neolithic to explain something of the Neolithic era and context in which these tools were found.
