Java Moss ( Taxiphyllum barbieri ), is an unusual plant because it does not have roots to speak of, will sink to the bottom, will grow like weeds under the worst conditions (no substrate, low light, no fertilizer, most water temp ranges and most PH ranges). What's most is, the Moss loves stagnant water and lots of nitrite. In fact it will THRIVE on high nitrite levels and left over food and fish fecal matters. Java Moss Java moss is a super easy plant for a beginner or someone with a low light tank. You can keep java moss in almost any kind of conditions and it will thrive. People like Java Java moss because it is so easy to care for. We also get people who are looking to make a Java Moss Wall or a Java Moss Carpet. It is a great plant for baby fish to hide in and it makes a great home for smaller creatures that your fish can feed off of. Your fish might even enjoy nibbling on Java Moss as well. When java moss has brown threads, it is not dead, it is just older growth that has been covered by new growth and has not received much light so does not contain chlorophyll, which gives it its green colouration. Once any brown threads are exposed to light, it will then begin to grow new strands and produce chlorophyll returning to its green colour after a few weeks. Java moss can be easily propagated via division. It is suitable for both aquariums and vivariums.
