CHLORINE - Kills Bacteria & Viruses, Sanitises & Disinfects.
STABILISED - Prevents the Sun's UV rays from destroying the Chlorine.
ALGAECIDE - Prevents the growth of Algae in the water.
CLARIFIER - A Flocculant that binds microscopic particles together (like dead skin cells & dead algae spores) that may make water look cloudy. Particles are clumped together for easier capture by your filter, giving the Sparkle back to your water.
How Many Chlorine Tablets?
For small hot tubs such as Lay Z Spas we recommend 1-3 tablets and for larger hot tubs
3-5 tablets. As to how often - unfortunately the question of how many tablets & how often doesn't really have one specific answer. There are many factors to take into account such as the water flow rate over the tablets, the temperature of the water, the pool/tub size (water volume) and usage of the tub or pool; amount of people & how often it is being used. Testing the water regularly & always before using the pool or tub is the best thing to do. If the tablets are not coping with the demand then add more or
if the chlorine level is too high then reduce the amount. Keep a record of how many tablets you were using and how long they take to dissolve. Tablets in pool or tub water that is particularly cool or not being agitated by jets or a pump, can take well over a week to dissolve. You may need to initially boost chlorine levels with either chlorine granules, liquid or
chlorine shock, due to the slow dissolving nature of
chlorine tablets, which means they react slower than granular or liquid chlorine.
Boosting Chlorine Levels if too low
If free chlorine levels are low while using Trichloroisocyanuric (TCCA) tablets and a quick boost is needed. Small amounts of Sodium Hypochlorite - Liquid chlorine (12-15% solution) may be added a bit at a time directly to the pool/tub water with jets/pumps running until required chlorine levels are reached. Never allow the liquid to come into direct contact with the tablets . Remove tablets/dispenser while adjusting chlorine levels with the liquid after which the tablets/dispenser may be returned to the water. Liquid chlorine is a good way to boost chlorine levels without adding further Cyanuric acid - there should be enough of this from the TCCA tablets.
Alternative way to boost chlorine levels:
An alternative way to boost chlorine levels short term alongside using your TCCA tablets & without increasing Cyanuric acid levels is to use Calcium Hypochlorite granules. Although these granules will not increase Cyanuric acid levels they will increase the calcium levels & pH levels so this may need to be monitored especially in hard water areas. As with all chemicals, never allow them to come into direct contact with each other & store them away from each other. If using Calcium Hypochlorite granules to boost chlorine levels, remove any TCCA tablets or the floating dispenser from the pool/tub, pre-dissolve the required amount or granules in a bucket of clean warm water first then add to the pool/tub water while jets/pumps are running and test. Once correct levels have been achieved the floating dispenser may be placed back in the pool or tub.
Chlorine levels too high?
If chlorine levels are too high a granular or crystal Chlorine reducer can be used.
FLOATING TABLET DISPENSERS SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM A POOL OR TUB WHILE IN USE.
In cases where the pool or hot tub water has become green, the water should be
treated with a Shock Treatment of Chlorine before using this product. This can be
done using the liquid chlorine mentioned above, using chlorine shock granules or the widely available stabilised chlorine granules (DICHLOR) also known as SDIC. With standard stabilised chlorine granules a
dose of up to 5x the normal amount (max 10ppm) can be used to clear algae infested water. For stabilised chlorine granules see here: Chlorine Granules .
