Antique Chinese Ancestor Painting Hanging Scroll, 19th century Qing dynasty, gouache and inks on paper.  The image is mounted in the traditional manner as a scroll on a support of paper with the front surround of the image being in yisebai-style of cream colour 'brocade' pattern silk. There is a turned wood roller at the base of the scroll. Scroll size: 230cm long x 104.5cm wide. Image size: 170cm long x 92cm wide. This is a large hanging scroll depicting four male and four female figures in four rows. All figures are shown seated and dressed in formal robes, the gentlemen with rank badges and the ladies in Court dress which includes elaborate headdress. The composition of the painting follows typical formal rules for depiction of the figures and the work overall is executed in a traditional style popular in late imperial China which reflects practices of family veneration and cultural values. It is clear from the quality of the artwork that the sitters were of high status and there is a high degree of detail in the costumes, etc. A further and important sign of this being a work of quality is the fact that each of the portraits is clearly of an individual rather than simply being of a generic 'type' as is more often the case in lesser quality work. As is most often the case, the artist ( or possibly team of artists) who painted the image remains anonymous. Please note that the free postage applies only to the UK.   • Condition: Condition is good considering the age and medium of the painting. The portraits are on a paper ground which has some slight darkening commensurate with age mainly where left unpainted. There are areas of rubbing on some of the garments showing as uneven tone but overall the colours remain vibrant and unfaded. Faint crease at approx centre of the image, but the paint has not split. The silk yisebai scroll-mounting around the image has some small scuffed areas. Please see photos.
