FEATURED IS A VINTAGE 1930s POSTCARD DEPICTING A FREE SUMMER CONCERT TAKING PLACE AT THE HATCH CONCERT SHELL / BANDSTAND SITUATED ON THE ESPLANADE ALONG THE CHARLES RIVER IN BOSTON, MA. PCs are from the Curt Teich Archives, have been in our possession for at least 15 years and are in near mint condition ... slight age toning to versos.  Back History:  Arthur Fiedler, the conductor of the Boston Pops from 1929-1979, wanted Bostonians to have access to music ... right from the beginning.  In 1929, he sought the funds to construct what was at first a temporary concert shell ... what is now known as the Hatch Memorial Shell ... and on July 4, 1929, conducted the first free concert (with half of the Pops Orchestra) from that venue situated on the Esplanade.  During that first summer, over 200,000 people attended ... that is what you are seeing on this PC ... the beginnings of what is still considered one of this Country's most beloved holiday musical traditions:  the 4th of July concert by the Boston Pops at Boston's esplanade ... now conducted by Keith Lockhart.  John Williams was the only other conductor to have the privilege.  Fiedler's last performance was 1978, the year before he died, and two years after he instituted the 4th of July spectacular as we know it for this Country's bicentennial! The reality:  by the 1970s, interest in the free concerts was waning ... in part due to the stuffy, "concert" music played.  This was long the bone of contention between Fiedler and his musicians.  He knew you needed "popular" music to attract the masses and "serious" musicians wanted nothing to do with that concept.  Further, there was not a lot of support from the "management" at Symphony Hall.  The bicentennial was coming.  Fiedler knew the milestone was important and set about making something special happen.  And it did.  1976 was the beginnings of the Boston Pops' 4th Concert as we know it today ... complete with the 1812 Overture and massive fireworks display.  For that performance, there were more than 400.000 people in attendance, "the largest audience in the history of orchestral performances."  That record was broken in 1998 and it is now the norm for better than 500,000 folks to show up for the event.  This little postcard represents the beginnings of it all .... the 1929 introduction of the free concerts becoming the subject for one of the earliest "linen" postcards published by the Curt Teich Co.  Hoping that some of you may want to have a memento of a favorite event ... whether you've been in person or enjoyed it on TV.  To quote a broadcasting icon, "Now you know the rest of the story".       Domestic shipping includes eBay tracking (not necessarily door to door ... more likely tracking of delivery to hub closest to buyer's address) and insurance.  Rigid mailer.  Check out our other offerings as we get them listed.  Happy to combine shipping. We do have tens of thousands of cards from the Curt Teich Archives and will be listing them as well as tens of thousands of others ... all types and locales.  Many are categorized. If you're looking for a certain topic, let us know.

Selling on eBay as early as 1997.  "The Mermaid" is also still a bonded auctioneer and real estate broker who spent the past "many" decades' specializing in books, ephemera, estates, and real estate.  Just shy of two million books sold to date.  Books and paper aside, if it is "Stuff", she has sold it!  She has now returned to eBay.  Health issues have brought us back.  We are even selling our own collections!  And ... we are picky.  If we wouldn't add it to our own collections, we won't sell it.  Hope you find something that you want, need, and, most important of all, will enjoy!  We look forward to transacting with you and making new eBay friends and customers.  Thanking you for your patronage in advance ... !

As to our "standard operating procedures":  Our normal shipping & handling time is three (3) days.  We ship weekdays with the exception of US federal holidays.  We will ship with either free shipping or calculated shipping ... it depends on the given scenario.  Often, calculated shipping will include insurance - again, depending on the item.  Payment is expected at time of purchase or close of auction, whichever is applicable.  This also applies to "best offer accepted" transactions.  Non-paying purchasers or bidders will be blocked from future transactions.  The same goes for winning bidders seeking to have sales cancelled.  That said, prior to the end of any auctions, bids can be cancelled through the HELP section of eBay.  If respective bidders are found to be cancelling bids in an excessive manner, however, they will be blocked from future transactions.  Shill bidding is not tolerated and will be reported.

"The Mermaid" is happy to ship globally.** (See below.)  For such transactions, "calculated" shipping fees apply and    Insurance will be required if not already included in applicable postal fee.

**Unfortunately, there are a few destinations to which we cannot and will not ship.  That circumstance involves a fluid dynamic the specifics of which may not be clear until point of sale.  If such is the case, we will allow the transaction to be cancelled at our discretion and without any negative reporting made to eBay.
