This porcelain tea cup and saucer was produced in Japan by a Kutani studio in the Meiji Period, or late 19th century. There are Japanese characters painted on each piece. The porcelain is egg shell thin and pure white. The decoration is elaborately hand painted. Symbolic objects such as scrolls, bakers and metal vessels surround each piece. There are branches of peonies and sprays of colorful flowers accompanied by birds. Dark borders are accented with elaborate hand gilding. The handle has a bamboo shape.
