Seller: regiomontanus (2.989) 100%, Location: Indianapolis, Indiana, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 251736487665 Deutschland und anliegende Länder, zur Übersicht der Eisenbahnen und Hauptstrassen 37 cm x 31 cm copperplate engraving, 43 cm x 34 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Justus Perthes, Gotha, 1854 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the 1854 map of the roadways, steamship routes and rapidly expanding rail network of Germany and surrounding regions compiled under the direction of Friedrich von Stülpnagel (1786-1865) for the world atlas issued by the renowned Stieler publishing firm established by Adolf Stieler (1775-1836). Trained as a military cartographer during the Napoleonic wars, Stülpnagel's cartographic skills and aesthetic sensibility are perhaps overshadowed by the brilliance of August Petermann in the overall Stieler universe. But Adolf Stieler called him "the tireless Captain of our workshop" - perhaps a bit of a joke as Captain was then Stülpnagel's rank in the Prussian military. The map is notable for its careful numeric presentation of distances between cities and provides a fascinating snapshot of German transportation at a time when Germany had acheived self-sufficiency with regard to railroad and locomotive construction and the railway network had expanded to more than 8,000 km of track. The map will make an important addition to any collection related to railroad history or even an attractive presentation if matted and framed. Lübeck–Lüneburg line seen here was completed in 1851 to Büchen but the extension from Büchen to Lüneburg was not yet complete when the map was published in 1854 so it is shown as a projected route and not highlighted. Likewise the Hanover-Kassel route was only in partial operation in 1854 and was not completed until 1856, also reflected in the map data. Note steamship routes to Stockholm, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg (4 days!) etc. To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Berlin to Hamburg as seen below measures just 7 cm actual size: The Munich-Augsburg line was extended to Ulm in 1854 and the map shows the extension - an indication of how meticulous Stülpnagel and the Stieler team were in compiling their maps. See condition description below regarding short area of centrefold separation at bottom as seen below: Condition - Please note carefully: Map is in overall good condition as can be ascertained from photos, strong impression with distinct platemark, original outline hand colour bright and vivid, image area clean. However bidders should note that the map exhibits an old repaired separation at lower centrefold that extends ~ 35 mm beyond neatline into map with some pronounced "rollover", minor loss and truncation of a few letters of placenames. The centrefold separation is reinforced on verso with acid-free tape to prevent further propagation but it is somewhat noticeable in this short section of map at bottom. Trivial soiling to margin extremities, no text on verso. Inquiries welcome and we encourage you to visit our other auctions on eBay for more original snake prints from this series.
