The hula has an interesting myth on how it was started. Long ago Pele, the goddess of fire, told her little sister, Laka, to amuse her because she was very bored. Right away, Laka got up and moved gracefully, acting out silently events they both knew. Pele was delighted when Laka began relating victories of King Kamehameha. She showed winds circling, directed by the goddess Laama'oma'o. She described trees, flowers, waterfalls, and stars. She honored Kuula, the god of the sea, by swaying side to side to the rhythm of the ocean waves. Pele clapped in delight. She was fascinated. The hula was born. Laka became the hula goddess. Hula is a dance form accompanied by chant or song. It was developed in the Hawaiian Islands by the Polynesians who originally settled there. The chant or song is called a mele. The hula dramatizes or comments on the mele with facial expressions, hand motions, foot and hip movements. There are many styles of hula. They are commonly divided into two broad categories of Kahiko and `Auana. Ancient hula, as performed before Western encounters with Hawai`i, is called Kahiko (Old, ancient, antique, long ago). It is accompanied by chant and traditional instruments. Kahiko is the name used today for traditional forms of the Hula, accompanied by oli (chant) and usually the Ipu Heke (double gourd) or Pahu (drum). Chants are offered asking permission to enter and obtain the greenery. Hula Kahiko dances sometimes incorporate instruments like the `uli`uli (feathered rattle gourd), pu`ili (split bamboo sticks), kala`au (wooden rhythm sticks), `ili`ili (lava stones) or the puniu (knee drum). Hula as it evolved under Western influence, in the 19th and 20th centuries, is called `Auana (To wander, drift, go from place to place). It is accompanied by song and Western-influenced musical instruments. Hula `Auana  displays graceful hands and swaying hips; smiling faces convey aloha and the beauty of the nature of Hawai`i to the audience. Hula `Auana is telling stories of the land, the ocean and the people in more contemporary forms, accompanied by sung lyrics and music, often using the `ukulele, guitar, and the double bass. Female Hula `Auana dancers usually wear dresses, men wear pants and shirts. Floral headpieces and flower leis are the typical adornment for the Hula `Auana. Hula `Auana dances sometimes incorporate instruments of the Kahiko type, like the `uli`uli (feathered gourd rattle). While it looks effortless, many hours of study and practice go into the learning of the Hula before a performance. Hula is taught in schools called a halau (Long house, as for canoes or hula instruction). The teacher of hula is the Kumu hula, where Kumu means “source of knowledge”. Hula dancing is a complex art form, and there are many hand motions used to signify aspects of nature, such as the basic Hula and Coconut Tree motions, or the basic leg steps such as the Kaholo, Ka`o, and Ami. “A`a i ka hula, waiho ka hilahila i ka hale” (“When one wants to dance the hula, bashfulness should be left at home”). The hula is danced at luaus and other parties and at festivals. Hula has always been a focal point in Hawaiian culture and is precious in the way it is presented. Hula dancers have to dress in bright and colorful clothes. Costumes and lei also illustrate the color or flower of an island or era of the particular dance. One outfit a hula dancer might wear is a flowered shirt and a grass skirt which is also called a hula skirt; often a hula dancer's head is adorned with a haku lei (Traditional Head Flower Lei) or a haku lei maile (Maile Head Lei). Although many people think the hula is swaying to a song with a grass skirt on and a steel guitar playing in the background, that is just a small portion of it. The hula is the literature of the Hawaiians. Ancient hula tells the story of the creation of the world and its creatures.
