ANTIQUE VICTORIAN CAST IRONGAUFFERING OR TALLY IRON
Antique, Victorian cast iron Gauffering or “Tally”iron with a wrought iron support. This Goffering iron consists of a circularcast iron pedestal/base with a wrought iron, snake shape support which holds atubular bullet shape receptacle for a hot poker.
This Goffering iron is 110 mm., high, 95 mm., long,78 mm., diameter base and weighs 248 grams.
Dating to c.1850 the GofferingIron also called an Italian or 'tally' iron (the latter a corruption of Italianiron' after the country from which they were introduced in the early 17thCentury) was used to make ruffles, frills, and flounces in starched linen. This was like a metaltest tube or barrel set horizontally on a stand. The tube was heated byinserting a red-hot metal poker-like rod, fresh from stove or hearth. Then thelinen, frilled cuffs and collars were grasped in both hands and pressed over thehot barrel making a semi-circular crimp. Other trimmings, like ribbons, weremoved across it.
Themaker is unknown, and the date is researched as1840-1880. The date of manufacture or country of origin are not known.
This Victorian gauffering iron waspre-owned, in good condition an des not any deep gouges. It does have marks,scratches commensurate with age, usage & wear. Seller’s ref. No. AA 303
