This is a gorgeous antique Chinese very intricate embroidery or needlepoint silk fabric panel quite possible from the sleeve of a robe or kimono. This exquisite panel is extremely finely stitched and has a blue silk background decorated with many petalled flowers and foliage, ceramic pots and urns in blues, creams, pinks and greens. This piece is worked entirely in fine silk threads.
The panel is in lovely condition with no loose threads, mothed areas or holes. There is some overall fading commensurate with age which does not detract from this lovely piece. The silk panel has a simple gold tone plain matt frame which works very well with the colours of the panel.
The term “forbidden stitch” refers to the “seed” or “knotted” stitches used along with satin stitches on highly decorative, finely worked silk most usually found on ceremonial robes and was intended only to be used on the robes of the Emperor and his court and was not supposed to leave the Forbidden City.
The framed panel is 20.5 inches / 52cm in length and 5.25 inches / 13 cm in width.
This item has had a previous life and may show signs of wear and tear commensurate with age. If I spot any issues these will be included in the description or in the photos of the item. Please check these before purchasing.
