George Stourton Mainwaring Larder was born in Wolverhampton Staffordshire in July 1893.    He joined the 3rd Battalion The Devonshire Regiment in 1912 and as a Lieutenant was wounded during battle in November 1914. He subsequently transferred to the RAF/RFC and was promoted to the Rank of Captain in the Royal Air Force in 1916.

After the end of WW1 he relocated to his family home in British Colombia Canada, where after a period of mining exploration he put his aviation experience to use by joining Canadian Airways Ltd. As well as expanding and promoting commercial aviation he helped to develop links with the Canada Air Post. It is during this time that he became involved with the R100 Airship’s successful transatlantic flight to Montreal Canada (August 1930), and subsequently with the Second Byrd Antarctic Expedition (1933-34).

With the ominous portends of the forthcoming WW2 conflict he arrived back in the UK in December 1938 on board the RMS Queen Mary. In October 1939 he was seconded with the rank of Captain R.A. to the Devonshire Regiment 222 nd Search Light Training Unit at Norton Manor Barracks, Taunton. Throughout WW2 he retained his pilots license and was actively involved with flying exercises with the RAF.

This Anti-Aircraft unit was set up to prepare soldiers to counteract the forthcoming military invasion of the Battle of Britain and the central role the Luftwaffe would play in it. It is supposed that his joint experience with Aircraft and Artillery would have been considered highly desirable for the position he was appointed to.

The units he trained and was involved with were deployed over much of Southern England (including London) during the Blitz.

Captain Larder survived WW2 and continued his interest in Aviation and the Military into his retirement.  These instructions were used by him prior to him re-joining  the RAF in 1939.
