This 1948 Martin 000-21 was owned and played by the late Lenny Pogan when he was a member of the instrumental folk group, The Village Stompers, who charted hits in the 60’s, most notably, their Grammy nominated, 1963 worldwide smash, Washington Square , a catchy little ditty that reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1963, and hit around the world, reaching #1 in Australia, and charting almost everywhere in the top ten! Lenny owned this guitar continuously, since he purchased it from the original owner, sometime in the late 1950’s, making it a two owner guitar, but mostly, a one owner guitar for the past half century or more!

The group was formed by record producer, Joe Sherman, and consisted of Lenny and seven other guys who all played various instruments on the band’s 6 albums on the Epic label, a division of Columbia. After the hits dried up, Lenny went on to Broadway and off-Broadway pit gigs, as well as touring and recording with prominent artists of the day, such as Harry Belafonte and Tammy Grimes.

This ’48 000-21 is a player. It’s got lots of very well repaired cracks on the front, the tuners have been replaced with Grovers (an upgrade), there’s a crack in the bridge in between the pins (common with old Martins), and the pick guard may be original, or a Martin replacement, it’s hard to tell. The strap pin on the neck heel is most likely a later add-on. The repairs on the cracks are very solid. I couldn’t budge them at all. Didn’t have a mirror, so I couldn’t check for sure, but they feel cleated. Very solid repairs. Lenny wouldn’t have done it any other way! Please see my pics for close ups, and message me if you have any questions. The case is a later Martin hard case from the 1970’s.

The back and sides, fretboard and bridge are all Brazilian Rosewood. Top looks like, and probably is, Spruce. It’s got the really cool, and somewhat hard to find, tortoise shell binding, and the serial number is 107129!

This guitar plays and projects beautifully! And this guitar wasn’t just owned by Mister Pogan. This is the actual guitar that Lenny played, touring worldwide with The Village Stompers, and on the recording of Washington Square !

Not a museum piece, by far, but a great player with a cool history! All it needs is some TLC, and to be played again! Oh yeah, and maybe a set of lighter gauge strings! LOL!

I tried to describe the guitar to the best of my abilities, but please look at my pics and ask questions, because it’s possible I left out some minor detail, although I tried not to. I do not accept returns on vintage instruments.
