About our Alginate

This listing for Regular Set Alginate. Regular Set Alginate has longer working time than Fast Set Alginate. More time - no need to rush, less panic.

English Instruction.

Spearmint flavour.

Shelf time 2 years.

  • Low temperature will increase the setting time and higher temperature will shorten the setting time. For best results use water at temperature range 21-23C (exemptions for retarding agent).
Room Temperature Mixing Time Working Time
23C 45 secs 2 min
  • Above figures are based upon mixing with distilled water. Using tap water for mixing has no significant influence on working time or overall setting time.
  • Working time and setting time has 5 sec and 10 sec temperature dependence effect respectively for each 2C departure from 23C.
  • Mix Alginate vigorously. Only dry and clean container.
NOTE : Mixing and working numbers given above will change if retarding agent in use! Ambient temperature also affecting setting time of Alginate. The best indicator is a colour. If mixture turning in to pale pink colour - immediately insert your moulding object into the moulding mixture. Never use mineralized drink water. Using of tap water is on your own risk, because UK water system are in closed cycle, water can have a high mineral content (calcium, phosphate, etc.), this may cause any Alginate to become “lumpy” or not set properly, become gray. We highly recommend use distilled water. Using of distiled water from ebay, also on your own risk. Please use distilled water as recommended (usually at Tesco or Asda store).

100% High grade. 100% produced and packed in UK specially for us, not in Asia as doing our competitors. Not only quality and safety! Ask yourself - why others seller does not specify country of manufacturing of Alginate? They only specify, their Alginate conforms to British safety standard, but nothing about country of manufacturing. Do not deprive country of income. Domestic consumption concerns very long chain of working places inside of country, from manufacturer and supplier to carriers, packaging manufacturers and more. The bulk of value creation and employment occurs in the production of goods and services for domestic consumption. Special Offer! 20gr of Alginate retarding agent Allows to extend working/mixing time of Alginate

Retarding agent allows to double mixing/working time of Alginate. No rush and no worries if warm water in use or large working area. Handy if casting torso or belly. One of the characteristics of Alginate is that the thicker the mix, the faster it sets. So if you mix it too thick, it may set up too fast before you can apply it. While casting torso or belly, mixture should be thick (hard consistency), as could slide off of the body if soft mixture. You need a thicker mix so that the Alginate stays in place as it is applied. So, you need extended mixing/working time of Alginate - Retarding agent its a solution. If you needed for extra time to apply on large areas of body. Useful if large amount of Alginate in use. Just imagine, you need mix 1.5 Ltr of mixture and add your molding object in 45 secs (for a full 500g bag of alginate you would add 1500ml of water). Handy in case of newborn 3D casting. It is nearly impossible to do hand/foot moulding on newborns and babies up to 3 years of age, because newborns and babies up to 3 years of age don’t understand and they don’t keep still long enough, they wriggling (mostly) while you taking moulding of their limb. If they wrigle limb that critical moment, those few sec when gel setting, moulding will be failed. In such cases only asleep babies it's a solution. But asleep babies are very sensitive to water temperature. Working temperature of Alginate (21/23°С) too cold and can awaken baby if you taking moulding on asleep baby, and your process can be ruined. If we increasing water temperature up to body temperature (36°С), suitable for asleep babies, Alginate working/mixing time reduced significantly (up to 10/20 secs) - no time to mix properly and put limb in to gel. In this case we have solution - ALGINATE RETARDING AGENT, which allows to increase working/mixing time twice. 20g per 500g of Alginate approx. doubles setting time. Dissolve in water - done! Dosage can be adjusted to suit. Please use enclosed instruction. Each bag (500gr) of Alginate included 20gr of Alginate retarding agent (if retarding agent option chosen).

Mixing Ratios Please follow included instruction. You can add more water than this ratios, which will thin the mix, which will slow the setting times, a thinner mix helps to reduce air being trapped in the mould. If spreading (face or belly casting) the alginate onto a model it is not recommended to add more water than the standard mix ratio as it becomes too difficult to spread when thin. For further information, please refer to included instruction. PLEASE NOTE: Actual amounts of materials will vary from individual to individual. User assumes full responsibility for own calculations of material needed.

Approximate Alginate Quantities 100g in a suitable container is enough for a baby hand or foot. The number of casts depends on age of baby, the skills and size of moulding container in use. 500g of alginate would be enough for a medium size hand or breast. Enclosed areas of the body such as the breasts will require a modroc bandage to encase the moulding to maintain the moulding shape. A large adult male hand will require approx 675g of alginate. An adult foot would require 2 x 500g, however this amount is dependent on the size of the foot and the container used. A face moulding would require 500g alginate and again a modroc bandage would be used to support the moulding. A full neck to crotch pregnant belly would require 4-5 bag, if attempting this cast ensure you have successfully cast small areas as this is a very demanding cast. Torso up to 3 bag. A large amount of modroc bandages would be required to support this large moulding. A bum cast from mid back to upper thighs would require approx 4 bag of alginate and approx 8 rolls of modroc to support moulding. As with all fast setting moulding materials preparation is crucial, have all quantities and materials measured and ready for use. Ensure that the model is aware before starting of how they should pose, perform a dry run to avoid material wastage, if casting hands ensure model is aware not to curl fingers as air may get trapped underneath the fingers. If moulding hands or feet, you can use polythene bags or drink bottles or a plastic containers. The advantage of using plastic containers is, that the container will in turn become a support jacket for the mould however you do use more material with a container than plastic bags. If casting onto any area with long hair, use a petroleum jelly such as Vaseline to act as a barrier, do not use the petroleum jelly on non hairy areas such as breasts as the alginate will slide off.

Please read before order placed × Please note - you are working with fast setting moulding material (Alginate)! Possible errors and wastage of moulding material if does not follow instruction, or read instruction incorrectly. This is very similar with cake cooking in your first time, possible errors until you become familiar how it's working, quantities and temperatures. Don't worry, 500g is enough for casting up to 4-5 newborn limbs, up to 4 limbs of a baby under one year, or 2-3 limbs of an older child. The number of casts depends on age of baby, the skills, and size of moulding container in use. Actual amounts of materials will vary from individual to individual.

Caution : If you want to do a face cast using Alginate, never try it for the first time without professional guidance. There can be a real danger of inexperienced users accidentally blocking the model's airways.

Casting FAQs

Casting FAQs ×

Baby & Child Castings 1. Will it hurt my baby? Absolutely not. Your baby will be putting his or her hand or foot into a soft creamy mixture which will become firm but stay flexible after just one minute. The hand or foot then slides easily and cleanly out of the mould. The moulding powder is mixed with cold water which may cause momentary surprise! 2. Could my baby be allergic to the moulding agent? The moulding powder is a complete natural product (made from seaweed) and is hypo-allergenic, non-toxic and 100 biodegradable. It is widely used within the medical profession for taking skin and tooth impressions. Small scale skin test recommended, just in case. 3. How long does it take? It takes no longer than 1 minute for the mould mixture to set once the hand or foot is placed in the moulding container. The entire process takes no longer than 5 minutes. 4. My mould sets too quickly. The time taken for the mould to set varies with temperature of the air and the water as well as the amount of water added. You can use one of our kit "3D Casting Kit for newborn and babies up to 3 years" , which contains SLOWE SET Alginate, which has extended working/mixing time. To find out more: "3D Casting Kit for newborn and babies up to 3 years" 5. Does my baby need to be asleep? Not necessary, but in case with newborns and babies up to 3 years of age, we would recommend kit which contains SLOWE SET Alginate, because Newborn and children up to 3 years of age don’t understand and they don’t keep still long enough, they wriggle while you taking moulding of their limb. If they wriggle at that critical moment, those few sec when mixture settling, the moulding will have failed. In such cases it is best to be asleep. But body of sleeping babies (as all of us) are sensitive to temperature change, this can wake up them. Working temperature of Regular or Fast set Alginate is 21/23°С, which is too cold and will probable waken baby and your process can be ruined. If we increasing water temp up to temperature of body (31-33°С), Regular or Fast set Alginate working/mixing time reduced significantly (up to 10/20 secs) - no time to mix properly and put limb in to mixture. In this case we have solution - SLOW SET Alginate, which has extended working/mixing time. So, by using SLOW SET Alginate, you still have 40/50 sec for mix properly if water temp is 31/33°С. "3D Casting Kit for newborn and babies up to 3 years" 6. Is the process very messy? No. Once the mixture sets it forms a rubber-like mould which peels easily from the skin and baby's hand or foot will emerge completely clean. We recommend doing home castings in the kitchen so that any mixture, once set, will peel cleanly away from smooth surfaces. Wear a old shirt and roll up the sleeves. Alginate and Casting Plaster won't stick to skin or other non-porous surfaces, but will stick to clothes and carpet. 7. Can reuse the mould? No, it has to be broken up to peel it away from the plaster cast so it is not possible to reuse the mould.
