Tillandsia Caput Medusae The Tillandsia Caput Medusae is an unique plant in the Tillandsiaspecies. The shape and form of this species is certainly rare and so the plant is named after this. With the thicker head (caput) on the bottom and the wonderful firmly curly leaves, the Tillandsia CaputMedusae is compared to a female figure from the Greek mythology. Medusa, the woman with snakes as hair, which are quite similar in its turn with the curly leaves of this kind of Tillandsia. Other common names alongside Tillandsia Caput Medusae are also Medusa’s head and octopus plant.
Tillandsia Juncea The Tillandsia Juncea is a relatively long and narrow species within the Tillandsia family. With its thin green leaves and a height of 30-40 centimeters, the Tillandsia Juncea is very suitable for tall vases and decoration. This plant can efflorescence well below average care , and so there will grow a nice and powerful purplish flower from thecenter. Generally, the Juncea grows and flourishes relatively slow when compared to other Tillandsia species. Sometimes it takes almost a year before the non blossomed flower entirely ceased blossoming.
Tillandsia Ionantha red The Tillandsia Ionantha red is a very exclusive product. The Ionanthakind, in general, is one of the most common species within the epiphyte family of Tillandsia. Because of its small and compact form, it is very easy to use in flower arrangements and bouquets. Moreover, the Ionantha red is highly decorative and beautiful to combine and use for decoration purposes. The Tillandsia Ionantha red requires also very little care compared to other Tillandsia species, which makes it a great and easy-care product to have and work with.
Tillandsia Multiflora The Tillandsia Multiflora is a plant that looks a lot like the TillandsiaAbdita and therefore just as colorful. However, the green, sometimes reddish leaves are smoother and less soft. At a later stage theTillandsia Multiflora can be entirely red in color and in the flowering stage produces this kind Tillandsia one or more purplish flowers from the heart.
Tillandsia Melanocrater The Tillandsia Melanocrater is a unique species that occurs in variouscolors. The pointed leaves of this plant can differ from yellow-green to red. Like all other types of Tillandsia, the Melanocrater descends from the bromeliad plantfamily. The Tillandsia Melanocrater is kind of similar to the Tillandsia juncea if you look at the pointy leaves and thin form that both have. However, the Melanocrater is generally much smaller.
Tillandsia Harissii The Tillandsia Harissii makes its distinction within the Tillandsiaspecies by its fine greyish-white spiky leaves. The flowering of this kind is quite remarkable, because the red bloom is very show against the greyish-white / silver leaves. The Tillandsia Harissii prefers bright light as this unique and bright Air Plant may appear to do so.
Tillandsia Concolor
Tillandsia Argentea Height approx: 7 cm
Tillandsia Ionantha The Tillandsia Ionantha is one of the most common species within the epiphyte family of Tillandsia. Because of its small and compact form, this plant is very easy to use in beautiful flower arrangements and bouquets. They initially appear in desert climates. The Tillandsia Ionantha requires very little care compared to other species of Tillandsia, which makes it an outstanding and easy-care product to have. Height approx: 6 cm
Tillandsia Bulbosa The Tillandsia Bulbosa is a dinstinctive species in the Family of Tillandsia. This plant almost knows no other species that are similarly looking. With beautiful narrow, mostly curly green leaves, Tillandsia Bulbosa is a one of a kind. Relatively speaking, this plant is not vulnerable because of its compactness  and hardness. . Height approx: 8-12 cm Height approx: small 4-6 cm
Tillandsia Magnusiana The Tillandsia Magnusiana is a gentle and perhaps the most grayish species within the epiphyte family. With its many and thin hairy leaves that have a spherical appearance, the Magnusiana is unique in its kind. Because of to the flatter bottom and leaves that keep the plant balanced, the Tillandsia Magnusiana is easy to put down steadily and therefore very easy to use in various decorations. Height approx: 8 cm

 General Tillandsia Care

LIGHT . Need  bright skylight . Place by windows, on balconies, in patios or under a tree. If given direct sunlight, early morning sunlight is preferred. Provide partial shade (~50%) from scorching noon or early afternoon sun.

Bright artificial light  can be used. Place plants on table directly below 3-4 fluorescent tubes on the ceiling or directly under a daylight-bulb positioned not more than 30cm away from the plants for 8-14 hours a day.

AIR CIRCULATION .   Need good air circulation.

WATER .  Frequency of watering depends on the environment  in which the plants grow. Water plants more often if weather is hot, windy or dry, less often if weather is wet. Generally, water plants once a day (best in the morning), by spraying them till they are dripping wet.  Do not let water collect in leaf crevices for a few consecutive days as it may lead to rot. Water collected should dry within a day. If need, turn plants upside-down to drain excess water.

When a plant is dehydrated, its leaves will curl up, learn how to recognise this condition & water accordingly.

In addition to spraying the plants, they can be completely submerged in water once a week for up to 6-8 hours, this will thoroughly hydrate the leaves. After soaking, pick up the plants and turn them upside-down to allow excess water to flow out, then place the plants at a location with good air circulation (by an open window, balcony or patio) for them to dry properly. If need, use a portable fan to gently blow dry the plants. Extra care must be given to the bulbous & ‘furry’ species as excess water trapped between the leaves can cause rotting. If you're not sure, do not soak bulbous & 'furry' plants.

Spray the plant till it is dripping wet and let excess water drain out (2-4 times a week).

NUTRIENTS.   Use liquid fertilizer. Spray whole plant once every 2 weeks. Alternatively, the plants can be submerged in the fertilizer solution. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plant Care

Caring for your Tillandsia aka Tillys , Air Plant or Airplant

Tillandsias grow differently than most other house plants, so they can be confusing to the beginner. They are really very hardy, and require much less attention than other house plants. The following simplifies the instruction but you can scroll down for much more specific information.

Protect them from frosts

Most prefer cooler night temperatures – 10-15 degrees less that daytime is ideal

Give them bright, filtered light.

Provided the atmosphere is not too dry (as in an air-conditioned home) they can survive with water misting and the occasional bath.

If you are growing them indoors and the air is dry, you will need (at minimum) to submerge the plant in water for 2-3 hours about every two weeks. Otherwise, in a shade-house or unheated home, you can use a soaking mist once or twice a week in summer, once a month in cooler weather.

Light

Bright filtered light is the general rule, and the higher the humidity of the air the higher light will be tolerated. Outdoors the silvery-leafed varieties can usually be grown in full sun, but in an unshaded greenhouse or close to unshaded glass in a sunny room or conservatory the same plant will quickly burn because the air dries out like an oven.

In a very sunny spot indoors they may need daily misting or weekly soaking depending on which method you prefer. See watering and misting below.

Artificial light

Full spectrum artificial light (fluorescent) is best. Plant should be no further than 36″ from the fluorescent tubes and can be as close as 6″. A four-tube 48″ fixture works well. Bulbs can be any full spectrum type Gro-Lux , Repta -Sun, Vita-Lite , etc. Light should be set with a timer, 12 hours per day.

The following information about the different types of bulbs may be helpful:

INCANDESCENT PLANT GROW LIGHTS Most incandescent plant lights are best used to highlight indoor plant groupings and have very little use as a true plant ‘growing’ light, even those that are labeled as a “grow light”.

Newer color corrected incandescent spot grow bulbs are suitable for adding supplemental light or highlighting to a single plant, such as an orchid or indoor bonsai tree.

However, you should never place an incandescent bulb closer than 24 inches over your plants. Incandescents burn very hot and will burn plants when placed close enough for them to appreciably affect plant growth.

Most incandescent bulbs have an average life span of 750 hours.

SODIUM LAMP (HIGH-PRESSURE SODIUM LAMP) High-pressure sodium lamps operate by igniting sodium, mercury, and xenon gases within a sealed, ceramic arc tube. Sodium lamps emit light energy in the yellow/red/orange regions of the spectrum; the red spectrum stimulates flowering and fruit production. Many indoor gardeners switch to sodium lamps when it is time to induce flowering or fruiting of their plants.

SON-AGRO A sodium bulb which, according to the manufacturer, Philips Lighting, produces 30% more blue light than standard sodium bulbs. The 430-watt SON AGRO also emits 6% more light than the standard 400-watt sodium lamp.

METAL HALIDE (MH) LAMP A high-intensity discharge lamp in which the light is produced by arcing electricity through a mixture of metal halides. The light produced by metal halide lamps is in the white-blue spectrum, which encourages vegetative growth and “bushiness,” while discouraging upward growth. This is the bulb to use in the first, vegetative phase of plant growth

Watering your Airplants

Thoroughly wet your Tillandsia 2-3 times per week; more often in a hot, dry environment; less often in a cool, humid one. In conditions of extreme drying, and consequent moisture loss, Tillandsia cannot get replacement water from their roots like a terrestrial plant, or draw on internal reserves like a succulent.

The Water you use is important. NEVER USED DISTILLED WATER! Softened Water is a NO NO for the salt content. Filtered water, tap water that has sat long enough for the chlorine to dissipate, bottled water or RO are all fine. Pond Water and aquarium water works well as long as they aren’t over crowded with fish and/or reptiles.

Outdoors you may never need to water Tillandsias hanging in a tree if you live in a temperate climate with some humidity. Indoors, the hotter and drier the air, the more you need to water.

Plants should be given enough light and air circulation to dry in no longer than 3 hours after watering. Wind can be a detriment as the plant dries too quickly. Remember that inside with a window fan as well. If the plant dries within a very short period of time, it is not hydrating at all.

Spray misting is insufficient as the sole means of watering but may be beneficial between regular waterings in dry climates to increase the humidity.

If the plant is in a shell, be sure to empty the water out. Tillandsias will not survive in standing water.

Under-watering is evidenced by an exaggerating of the natural concave curve of each leaf.

IMPORTANT After wetting your plants thoroughly, turn them upside down and gently shake them. I have found that the water that collects near the base is detrimental if left to long. I have lost many plants that way while learning.

One last thing about watering your air plant. It is much better to water in the morning than at night. Air plants absorb the Carbon Dioxide from the air at night instead of the day time. If the plant is wet, it does not breath therefore, unless it can dry quickly at night, plan on morning baths.

Air Circulation

Following each watering, Tillandsias should be given enough light and air circulation to dry in 4 hours or less. Do not keep plants constantly wet or moist.

Do not allow to dry to quickly though. 1-3 hours is optimum.

Also if the air is hot, a breeze acts to cool the plant and keep it from becoming overheated.

Temperature

Optimum temperature range for Tillandsias is 50 – 90 degrees F.

I have kept my plants outside during 40 degree F. weather but only for a night or two knowing it would be warm during the day. Tillandsia will die with frost.
