A fine and unusual late George III Sheraton period Chest of Drawers, in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster and London. English, c. 1795-1800. The rectangular top, veneered in well-grained plum-pudding mahogany, with a reeded edge and rounded projecting corners, above the three graduated cockbeaded drawers, thickly veneered in finely figured mahogany, fitted with unusual period correct custom-made handles, and flanked by reeded corner columns, terminating in bold turned and reeded toupie feet. The bottom edge finely strung with ebony. Superb colour and patination, striking grain. Related reeded pilasters and projecting corners of the top appear on a design for a straight fronted chest in the Gillow Estimate Sketch Books for 1789, supplied to Gillow's London shop. Similar feet and other decorative features also appear on a library desk, formerly in the collection of HRH The Duke of Kent, illustrated in Geoffrey Beard and Judith Goodison, English Furniture, 1500-1840, Oxford, 1987, p. 276 and Ronald Phillips, Fine Antique English Furniture, 2013, p. 208. Attached to the back boards is an early 20th century printed label reading "Ebbutt's Ltd (Croydon) Depository", which suggests possible London provenance of the chest. The item's elegant design, together with the choice of fine veneers and extensive use of quality timber (the side boards are made of dense solid mahogany), and extraordinary attention to detail (the back feet of the chest are identical to the front ones, and are reeded throughout) suggest some the best cabinetmakers of the era, the likes of Gillows or Miles and Edwards.
