One of the more amazing displays of color in petrified wood that we've cut in quite some time and in a mantle piece sized set of bookends too!  This unbelievable spotted fossil wood is a hefty pair of bookends crafted from petrified wood dug at Oregon's famous Hampton Butte - home to the "Oregon Green" petrified wood casts.  This log went far beyond green though with a stunning display of spotted color that reminds me a bit of ocean jasper!  The large partial cross section of what was once a tree trunk is now accented with red spots scattered and laced through what was the center of the log.  I can honestly say I've never seen a more beautiful or more striking petrified wood specimen from this location - it really does look like the colors of the Christmas season frozen in stone!  The stone is a bit porous and has a lower degree of silica than some of the more gem like petrified wood we typically work on, but we still managed a fair polish on the display face of this unusual and stunning specimen.  Large enough to command the center spot on a mantel or bookshelf, this 100% natural and completely functional fossil artwork will both awe and inspire!  The back of these stone bookends are cut smooth and unfinished while the rest of the sides are rough and naturally weathered.  The display face is polished to a nice finish to bring all of the color of this ancient fossil artwork to it's full glory!    This is a much darker color that will show the richest hues in good light.  The colors are very contemporary and would look fabulous in a home or office setting.   It's a nicely finished, professionally made set of bookends sure to accent any shelf.  Only the front face is polished, the outer edge is a natural rind from the fossil log and the unpolished back is cut smooth and flat.  The base and book contact sides are felted to protect your furniture and books.  A gorgeous and absolutely unique set of large petrified wood bookends!

One of the most uniquely colored petrified wood deposits in the world is near Hampton Butte in Central Oregon. This location is famous for "Oregon Green Wood". We've collected some exceptional "green wood" from collections that originated near this site over the last few years and I've recently prepared some choice ones. This is one of my favorite materials to use in bookends as it is so richly colored and every set is completely different from the last. This wood is actually a cast replacement (in most cases) of the log after it rotted int he ground and the void was filled with other colorful jaspers and agates.  In some rare instances the wood petrified (at least partially) and you can make out the cell structure of what are usually large conifers.

In this fabulous set the wood grain is delicately and intricately preserved in the upper outside corner regions of each specimen and it's very clearly sycamore!  I had never seen sycamore from this location previously and that fact alone makes these bookends pretty special!  If you pick up one of the miniature illuminated microscopes from our eBay store it provides plenty of viewing power to see this detail yourself!

We select only the showiest pieces of petrified wood and other gemstones to cut into bookends. These pieces are carefully cut in our shop so that you end up with a perfectly matched pair, one agate piece is the mirror image of the other. Of course, there are plenty of differences in the two halves, but the photo should let you appreciate how well we do this. The bookends sit perfectly upright and are completely square to one another. They are felted on both the sides and bottom to protect the books and the shelf. We make sure they are 100% functional on top of being beautiful! The finish looks poured on - but there's nothing there except rock!! This is the only set of bookends we have cut from this location so don't miss this fabulous natural treasure!

Each half measures about 7 7/8" tall & 6 5/8" wide at the widest spot on the polished face. They're cut about 1 5/8" thick. Weight for this set is about 15 lbs. which makes these bookends suitable for just about any sized book you have including the typical sized text book, reference books or cook books.

What better way to accentuate a bookshelf or your mantle than with this unbelievable natural work of art!

A nice, unique naturally wonderful stone collectible exclusively from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary .
