Seller: chaseleyantiques (825) 100%, Location: Staffordshire, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 172422751715 Here for your consideration is a beautiful and extremely rare, Antique 1908, Art Nouveau, sterling silver, William Comyns, travelling/dressing table clock, having fully hallmarked English case, with swing handle top, pressed husk/roped edge and engine turned engraved garland front, raised on splayed bracket feet, 8-day spring driven mechanism with platform lever escapement, fronted by an enamel Roman enumerated dial, complete with its original tan leather case. It's a truly stunning piece of William Comyns workmanship, fully hallmarked W.C for 'William Comyns', with London leopards head assay stamp, lion passant, and the date letter 'n' for 1908. Considering this delightful silver travelling/table clock is 108 years old it's in fantastic original condition, with no splits, dents, or damage. The original tan leather case does have some age related wear/tear commensurate with 108 years of age, but nothing unusual ... actually extremely rare to find a travelling/table clock that has retained its original case. It's certainly one of the best we've seen, with some beautiful patination to the silver, commensurate with its age. This superb silver table clock has just undergoing a complete clean and service, so should give the purchaser years of trouble free use and enjoyment !! William Comyns silversmiths .... This very important firm of manufacturing silversmiths that was established by William Comyns when he purchased the silversmithing business of Robert Tagg in 1858 entering his first assay marks from the address of the basement of no 2 Carlisle Street Soho. Over the next 50 years they moved premises three times, always remaining in the west end of London. 1 Percy Mews, Rathbone Place, 16 Silver Street, Golden Square, Soho, until subsequently establishing a permanent base at 41, 43 ,45, 47 Beak Street, Soho S1. Additional premises were again taken in 1903 at 54 Marshall Street, Soho. The company changed to William Comyns and Son in 1885 when William Comyn's two sons, Charles Harling Comyns and Richard Harling Comyns joined the company partnership. In the 1880s William Comyns & Sons had enormous success producing a vast amount of goods retailed by many of the foremost shops including Tiffany & Co of New York and Paris. William Comyns died in January 1916. His son Charles Harling Comyns died while attending a sale at Christie's in 1925. The company became a limited liability company, registered on 20th October 1930, with Richard Harling Comyns as permanent governing director. Upon Richard Harling Comyns death in 1953, William Comyns & Sons Ltd was purchased by Bernard Copping. They're now one of the last surviving manufacturing silversmiths still left in London, with premises at Comyns House, Tower Street, London, WC2. Dimensions as follows .... Clock .... Case .... This is an extremely rare find indeed. I've only got one, once it's gone .... it's gone. You might never find another one this good, and if there's one thing I've learned about antiques, when items are of quality he who hesitates usually loses out.
