Jules Didier was born on 26 May 1831 in Paris.  He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in April 1852 and began studying under Léon Cogniet, an established academic artist who worked as a portrait and landscape painter.  He was also a pupil of Jules Laurens, another landscape artist and lithographer. Didier made his debut at the Salon of 1853, exhibiting a lithograph entitled Le Lithographe; étude (The Lithograph; study). The mid-19th century ushered in a new period of appreciation for printed works. Artists began to re-evaluate the hierarchy of the arts, which until then had placed painting at the highest level, as prints were considered by many to be only suitable for preparatory sketches or reproductive material for the masses. The fact that Didier began his public career with a lithograph shows the influence Laurens must have exerted on him.  Didier was also influenced by Constant Troyon and Rosa Bonheur in the depiction of animals and at the beginning of his career at the Salon he executed two lithographs inspired by their works.   A definitive moment in Didier's career came in 1857, after he presented the work Jésus et la Samaritaine (Jesus and the Samaritan Woman) at the Salon, for which he was awarded the Prix de Rome in the historical landscape category. The Prix de Rome was awarded to a young artist and enjoyed the full approval of the Salon jury. In such a controversial artistic period, winning this prize attested to the acceptance by the Salon jury and the continuation of the tradition and style of the École des Beaux-Arts. Like all Prix de Rome winners, Didier travelled to Rome for a period of four years. He returned from this trip with a mass of studies that would have a lasting influence on his work, as many of his later paintings featured Italian views. At the Salon of 1863 he exhibited Horace, Enfant, Retrouvé par des Bergers (Young Horace Found by Shepherds). From this moment on, he began to exhibit regularly at the Salons. At the beginning of his career, Didier had shown an affinity for nature and animals, but after his time in Italy, he combined his two interests and produced many works based on the Italian landscape but also including representations of animals. Until the end of his career at the Salon, he continued to mix the themes of animals and Italian landscapes.  As his work became better known, he also participated in other French exhibitions, such as the Exposition Universelle of 1878, where he exhibited a large watercolour of almost four metres in length, depicting a bird's eye view of Paris. Two years later, he obtained a commission from the City of Paris for a series of decorative paintings for the École de la rue Château Landon, including another large frieze entitled Travaux Agricoles (Agricultural Work) which was also exhibited at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. Also in the same pavilion was another long work, five metres long, representing Cours de la Seine from a bird's eye perspective. Didier continued to receive further state commissions. One of the most important commissions was for the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. In 1892, he executed four paintings, including: Le Lac Daumesnil (Daumesnil Lake); Le Parc Montsouris (Montsouris Park); Les Champs Elysées; La Place de la Bastille. This commission was exceptionally important because the State used Didier to represent the artistic trends taking place in France. In fact, at this time, there was a definite interest in depicting the most well-known French places in large-scale topographical panoramas. In this way, the French could publicise their parks and urban centres through easy-to-understand paintings. Didier also became a teacher, taking on numerous students; in 1903 he was appointed Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. He continued to exhibit until his death in May 1914. LOUIS EMILE DARDOIZE (PARIS, 1826 - 1901) He was a French print publisher, lithographer and painter born in 1826 and died in 1901. Before the age of thirty, he founded a print publishing house in Paris, based at 12 rue de l'Eperon, an activity that also allowed him to devote himself to painting, which he carried out with some success, winning several awards.  SHIPPING AND INFORMATION ABOUT THE PAINTINGS FOR SALE:
