Description - Nelson, Horatio, H. M. S. Foudroyant (1798-1897), Royal Navy, copper Vesta (match) case, made in the United Kingdom from the copper of the ship, engraved 'H W Taylor 1901' (photographs 1 to 10). H. M. S. Foudroyant was built in Plymouth, England & launched in 1798 (photograph 1). The ship served with the Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary & the Napoleonic wars, & later as a guard ship & training vessel. H. M. S. Foudroyant was also Vice-Admiral Nelson's flagship from June 1799 to June 1800. After restoration, the ship under private ownership was being exhibited in Blackpool & beached on Blackpool Sands during a storm on 16th June 1897 (photograph 1). The ship broke up that year during the December gales & craftsmen used the ship's materials in the manufacture of various decorative pieces, such as this copper Vesta case (photographs 1 to 10). The Vesta case consists of a hollow lid & container, with the lid opening via rotation by approximately 90 degrees due to a hinge joint located on the left side of the container (photographs 1 to 6). The lid has a small adjustable connection ring at the top, & a small extruding finger handle on the bottom of the left side, which is used for opening the lid (photographs 1, 5, 7, & 9). The front & back surfaces of the lid & container are decorated with an engraved leaf pattern (photographs 1 & 2). The faded rectangular plaque on the front of the container displays an image of the ship, its name, & the dates it was commenced, launched, & wrecked (photograph 1). The original owner of the Vesta case has had their name 'H W Taylor' & the date '1901' engraved within a shield on the container's back surface (photograph 2). Matches would have been stored in the container's hollow interior, with the hollow lid's interior closing over the inset lip around the top of the container (photograph 5). Some markings on the front surface of this lip are possibly those of the maker (photograph 6). The matches would have been lit by striking the match head along the indented line, situated along the bottom surface of the case's exterior (photograph 10).                  Condition - The exterior surfaces of the Vesta case include some small dents, scratches, discolouration marks, & areas of tarnish (photographs 1 to 10). The rectangular plaque situated in the centre of the container's front surface has worn. The interior surfaces of the lid & container include various areas of discolouration (photograph 5). However, generally the Vesta case is in very good condition when considering its age & previous use (photographs 1 to 10). Dimensions - The height of the Vesta case is 5.3 cm, the width 3.7 cm, the depth 1.1 cm, & the weight 33 g (photographs 1 to 10).
