Gibson 3 Pickup Les Paul Custom Wine Red c.1977 Vintage Electric Guitar

Here for sale we have a Gibson Les Paul Custom in Wine Red Finish. Made in the USA, the serial number and specification of this guitar indicate that it was manufactured between 1977 and 1978. The serial number was originally printed on the headstock, and has been impressed by a previous owner to preserve it. Gibson began embossing their serial numbers in mid ‘77. The naturally aged and faded finish reveals the ‘pancake’ construction of the body. Gibson discontinued this construction method in ‘76, although pancake bodies that had already been manufactured were used on guitars until as late as ‘79. Further indications come from the original CTS pots, which are stamped to show their manufacture as the first week of ‘78. Gibson ‘T’ Top humbuckers are installed, which our research has dated to the late ‘70s. The neck pickup has been replaced with a DiMarzio Super Distortion, which we have dated as late ‘70s to early ‘80s. This makes us confident that this is an authentic vintage Gibson.

This guitar features a set-neck construction, with the aforementioned ‘Pancake’ or ‘Multi-piece’ body construction comprising a thin layer of Maple sandwiched between two slabs of Mahogany, and a carved Maple top or ‘Cap’. The neck is a 3 piece Maple construction, topped with a 22 fret Ebony fingerboard, inlaid with real Mother of Pearl blocks. The pickups installed are a pair of 70s Gibson “T-Top” Humbuckers, and a late ‘70s/early ‘80s Dimarzio Super Distortion, all wired to the standard Three Pickup Les Paul controls.

The three-piece Maple neck sits comfortably in the hand, with a slimmer profile than modern Les Paul players will be accustomed to. The traditional 12" fingerboard radius feels nicely flat, whilst the Ebony provides a very luxurious and pleasant surface under the fingers. The years of playing that this guitar has seen produces a very familiar and ‘played-in’ sensation that feels very inspiring in the hands. With no weight relief, this guitar tips the scales at 10.55lbs, feeling very sturdy and dependable in the arms whilst producing the kind of sustain that has made this instrument a staple in the guitar community for as long as 7 decades. The familiar lines of the body are comfortable in the arms, with the body cutaway assisting in unrestricted access to the higher frets.

The trio of Humbuckers installed in this guitar are sought after for their unique sound. Famously used by Gary Moore of Thin Lizzy the ‘T-Tops’ have a tone that is reminiscent of the classic PAF humbucker. Their smooth attack adds a grind when the amp is pushed into distortion, with defined trebles and a rounded, warm character to the tone. With clean settings these pickups provide a glistening sweet sound that can only be described as crystal clear. The Super Distortion in the neck has some real bite and a high output enabling it to take charge of those fast lead lines and thunderous power chords, with every note soaring through the mix. When playing through a clean amp or rolling the volume down, The Super Distortion can offer a sweet, creamy tone that complements chords and softer playing styles. These pickups can easily cover a wide variety of styles and genres, from shimmering clean sounds or crunchy overdrives for rock and blues, to thick, buttery distortion for hard rock or even metal. The Les Paul Custom has been the dream guitar for many people, and for 47 years this guitar has, and continues to live up to that standard. This is your opportunity to own a genuine piece of Gibson’s history, with an instrument that tells its own story and provides an inimitable character and vibe.

Luthier Report

Our ID: 1050923100971

Weight: 10.55lbs

Serial Number: 71181504 (We are unable to verify if this is the correct serial, further details below)

Aesthetic Condition:

Headstock: Overall good condition. All aspects of the headstock demonstrate notable signs of ageing. There is chipping, scratching, checking and hazing to all faces, with exposed wood visible to the rear at the top edge. The serial number has been pressed into the wood to the rear of the headstock by a previous owner.

Neck: Overall good condition. The sides of the neck demonstrate notable wear, with the finish being worn away across a large section of the register on both the treble and bass sides. To the rear of the neck moderate indentation and chipping can be seen in multiple places. The fingerboard demonstrates only light markings.

Body: Overall good condition, all aspects of the body demonstrate notable signs of ageing. There is chipping, scratching, checking and hazing to all faces. This is most notable to the rear. The binding towards the treble side has expanded causing a different texture.

Condition of Frets:

The frets are flat, with some mild indentation in the lower register. This is apparent whilst playing, but does not currently negatively affect the playability of the instrument. There is no room for further fret work.

Current Set Up:

Truss Rod Condition: Fully functional & can be adjusted. It is apparent the truss rod nut has been replaced to include a spacer, allowing for easier adjustment.

Hardware Condition: Fully functional. The hardware is in good condition, creating suspicion that it has been replaced at some point. The hardware is good quality and functions correctly, with ‘70s accurate replacement machine heads fitted.

Structural Condition: No concerns or issues to note

Height of the string from the 12th Fret- Treble 1.5mm - Bass 2mm

Please be aware that the action on a guitar may move slightly in transit and this measurement is the current height.

Strings on Guitar - 10-46

Electrics:

The original pots have been replaced with CTS pots, and the original switch with a Switchcraft switch. Original electronics are included. The guitar comes with 2 Gibson T-top pickups, and what we believe to be a DiMarzio Super Distortion. All these pickups we believe to be from the late 70s to early eighties.

Further Notes:

This guitar clearly has been loved and played for many years. It has not been preserved perfectly, but plays very well. The serial on these models was printed to the headstock rather than impressed, and it is evident this has worn away over time. The previous owner has lightly impressed the serial, however it appears to be incorrect.

Case & Accessories:

Molded hard case

The case demonstrates notable signs of use, but functions as expected. Truss rod tool (5/16" socket) not included.

Please be aware that for international buyers import fees are not included in our postage and packaging cost, this only covers the cost of the guitar being sent to you. Import fees will be charged by Customs upon the guitar's arrival in the recipient country. Due to Brexit, this also applies to EU buyers. We advise checking the total import cost with Customs as this is not information we are able to accurately provide.
