Seller: birchall-hawke-antiques (4.762) 100%, Location: Colne, Lancashire, Ships to: GB & many other countries, Item: 201721017730 This Late 19th Century Aesthetic movement clock by Lewis Forman Day. The case is dark stained, with hand painted and gilded floral panels above and below the dial. The top panel has 'Night Shade' inscribed amongst deadly nightshade buds, and the bottom panel has 'Day's Eye' amongst daisies. The 'Day' in 'Day's Eye' refers to Lewis Day. Around the dial are carved relief panels with leaves and fruit. The clock's face is hand decorated in blue, white, and gilt. It's numerals are good examples of the stylised calligraphy of Lewis Day whose famous wallpaper designs and calligraphy helped sew the seeds of the Art Nouveau movement. 14.5cm porcelain dial with Arabic numeral cartouches to the eight day two train movement striking on a gong, contained within a case 53cm high, with key and pendulum. In good working order, strikes the hour and half hour Side trellis work backing silk cloth is falling to pieces otherwise the clock is in excellent condition.
