The new range of AJS and Match- less motorcycles is certainly enhanced by the addition of a brand new mod- el ; the 600cc “Super Clubman”. This model, which incorporates all of the proven features of the former range of twins, is in effect, a “big brother” to the well known 500cc twins. Another point of interest, is the fact that rigid frames have disap- peared completely from both lines, and even the trials mode) is equipped with the well engineered, and popular swing-arm rear suspension. The frames themselves have been redesigned, the principal difference being the seat post, which is now ver- tical. It has attached to it, at the lower end, a lug which provides the pivot bearing for the swing-fork. This lug is extended downward to bolt be- tween the rear of the engine cradle members. A general cleaning up of all models is evident. The spindle clamps, for instance, incorporated in the top bridge piece, now neatly anchors the control cables. Worthy of note, is the rather strong oil pump which on the twin cylinder models, pumps at the rale of 26 gal- lons per hour. The side of the tank is protected by a shield which provides an air space between it and the reser- voir. The reason for this is simply to protect the pillion passenger from discomfort caused by extremely hot oil, which is circulated at a terrific rate. Details, such as this one, have been given the closest scrutinization on all AJS and Matchless models for 1956. The new competition model Scram- bler, is fitted with a much improved single cylinder 500cc ohv engine. The flywheels of this engine are steel forg- ings, and the big end bearing is of the 7r racing type. An all new con- necting rod of robust proportions, is incorporated. Also, in addition to the normal method of supporting the crankshafts, an additional large roller bearing is provided on the timing side. The pushrod tubes are incorporated in the cylinder casting. Even with the large bore of the cylinder, the finning provided, is exceptionally generous. The new 500cc engine has a bore of 86 mm and a stroke of 85 mm. This cversquare designs is reported to de- velop approximately 39 B.H.P. For the American market, both the Clubman Twins, and the Sport Twins will be equipped with the new 600cc engines. Also, the popular Sport Twins, with alloy fenders, 21 inch front wheel, and 3 gallon chrome sports tank; will be available. So with the introduction of the 600cc twins, A.M.C. makes a strong bid for acceptance by those who de- sire the spirited performance of large capacity rtwins, coupled with superb handling qualities and moderate weight.   11312-5512-04
