These types of items were carved from cow horns in Scotland. This was undertaken by gypsy tinkler travellers who would perform chores on farms such as de-horning cattle. In return they were allowed to keep the horns which they turned into trinkets such as these to sell. They would sell them to Jewellers who would then embellish them with silver and have them hallmarked This lovely Scottish Quaich, a vessel used for sipping whisky , is made of cow horn and inlaid with solid silver mounted cartouches and a central hallmarked boss with the gaelic motto "Scuab As'i" which means Scoop All (Down in one), . The silver cartouche is hallmarked by William Dunningham & Co of Diamond Street Aberdeen who specialised in silver mounted horn pieces from 1890 onwards. This one dates to around 1900. It has two silver roundels on its lugs which are engraved with a Thistle and a St Martins Iona Cross, both Scottish Icons. It measures 4" across the lugs and nearly 1.25" in depth. This is a genuine antiques items and as such has wear, distress, patina commensurate with its age as shown in my many supersize photographs. Overall condition is very good and more than useable. The deviations / distress seen are part of the original Horn and would have been there since the item was made, and just proove that this horn came from a Heilan Coo grazed outside on the hill. 100Yr Old Scottish Aberdeen Silver Mounted Cow Horn Tinkler Gypsy Whisky Quaich

This is a Century 100 Year Old Scottish Aberdeen Silver Mounted Cow Horn Tinkler Gypsy Whisky Quaich.

These types of items were carved from cow horns in Scotland. This was undertaken by gypsy tinkler travellers who would perform chores on farms such as de-horning cattle.
