William Patrick Partridge was born in Sligo in 1874, the son of a train driver and reared in Ballaghaderreen, County Mayo. He grew up during the years of the Land War. He served his apprenticeship as a railway fitter in Sligo and moved to Dublin where he joined the Amalgamated Society of Engineers and became active as a trade unionist, Gaelic Leaguer and an early Sinn Feiner. He was a trusted friend and lieutenant to Jim Larkin and James Connolly, Partridge organised both craft workers and members for the ITGWU. He travelled extensively through Britain in 1913 seeking support for the Dublin Lockout. He was Dublin President of the ASE, a Dublin city councillor 1904-06 and 1913-17 and founder member of the Irish Labour Party. He held the rank of Captain in the Irish Citizen Army and was a Vice-President of the Army Council. He fought in the College of Surgeons with Michael Mallin and Countess Markievicz during the 1916 Rebellion. He was sentenced to 15 years penal servitude and deported following the Rising. This brought on his death in July 1917. At the time of his death he was Vice-President of the Dublin Council of Trade Unions.
