Post war in the north east of England, the fabric factories in Preston were awash with bright novelty printed high quality cotton fabrics. Horrockses Fashions, an established retailer in the UK since 1947 set about producing an enormous quantity of carefully designed New Wave range of dresses.
A breath of fresh air after the sombre war years and just what the English women were waiting for. Pretty, feminine and what’s more Queen Elizabeth herself purchased a quantity for her Royal tour. All the elements of fashion history. Dresses such as this are now regarded as investment pieces. This dress is in astounding condition. Minimal signs of wear, clean fresh white cotton with an all over print of grey foliage and pink florals.
The bodice is fitted
The skirt is full and gathered at the waist and almost ankle length. There’s a sentimental attachment to this label for me.
My mother had a couple of these dresses in her wardrobe, and one part of the Bolton Horrockses family were family friends. I went to school with their two daughters.
