By Kirk. -Worn. .  Georgian Portrait Coin Weight ---  Portuguese 4  Escudos or '' Joe''     By Kirk.  Diameter -- 1.0 inches approx.                       Material -- Brass or Bronze.                     Maker -- KIRK  Obverse -- Bust of Ioannes of Portugal.  Reverse -- THIRTY SIX SHILLINGS ( Partially worn away. )    ( Thirty six shillings. What the 4 Escudos was valued at in the British Isles )  Condition -- Worn. Not all the original details are readable. Some scratches. The makers name is no longer readable completely under the bust on the obverse.  Background -- In Georgian times it was common for the gold coins of other European countries to be accepted in trade. Merchants would require a variety of different weights for these . This example is for a Portuguese 4 Escudos coin. The nickname ''Joe'' comes from the monarch on the coins who was either Joannes (John V, 1706-1750) or Josephus (Joseph I, 1750-77) depending on the time of minting. This example is by the well known maker John Kirk and has what remains of the letters KIRK under the bust on the Obverse.
