This is a superb mid 19th century majolica dish or tray in the form of a frog on a lily pond leaf. On the base is an impressed GJ monogram for George Jones. The impressed mark was used between C.1861 and 1873 (Pottery and Porcelain Marks by Geoffrey Godden).
Condition: in good condition. One of the frog’s eyes has had some restoration. On close inspection it looks like the entire frog was covered in white paint, probably when the eye was restored. 99.9% of the paint has now been removed to reveal the original glaze. There is pooling of the original blueish white glaze at the base of the frog (there is also very small pooling of the white paint residue).
Size approx.: 17.5 cm across. 5.5 cm tall.
